Did they pay for one-way or roundtrip? Maybe they were not abandoned.

From the link:

However, the speed boat operator did not return to the agreed meeting point at 5 PM and did not answer repeated phone calls, according to the family. The sun set and darkness encased the nearly uninhabited island, scaring the family now stuck on a local beach.

Maybe they decided they wanted to stay longer and expected the boat to wait? Wrong country for that. ????

And maybe not. Linked article says the boat did not turn up at the scheduled time and place, and was not answering phone calls. Since it gets dark at 6pm I doubt anybody wanted to be later!

and maybe the russian was tanked up on vodka early, rowdy and the skipper had had enough

You may have a point, although I am not going along with the idea of him being drunk.... being rude and ill mannered is a possibility. The boat owner 'had a dish best served cold'... toasting the Russian from afar.

Thanks. Clearly it was simply a misunderstanding between the family and boat operator then ????
