A day out grocery shopping in Lamphun

Featured Replies

It was shopping day today.  It was time to restock things that have been getting depleted in our storeroom.

Prices are interesting depending on what you buy and where it's from.  Obviously Thailand isn't impervious to inflation and I've noticed that meat prices and pork are edging up fairly quickly.  However - one thing I find interesting is the price of pork cuts.  There use to be a significant difference in the price of lean pork vs fatty pork.  That has changed.  A lot of the cuts regardless of the fat content seem to have similar prices.  Bacon and fatty cuts for bacon are through the roof.  On the flip side, ground pork that I bought today is incredibly lean.  I'd never buy it from Makro.  I used to just buy a lean cut and use a food processor to grind it.  Now I just buy the ground pork as it looks great.  Goodbye bacon ????, hello home-made patty sausage
But the good news is that a lot of the local veggies are still cheap.  We're buying more often at local markets as the prices of veggies are pretty stable.  I pity the US where the eggs are $9 buck a dozen.  Criminy - $0.75 per egg.  Farm-fresh local eggs are 4 baht or about $0.12 apiece or over 6 times less.

Cheese!  Major price spike and the selection has gone down the tubes in Makro.  I settled for a block of cheddar that was about 1/2 the price of a smaller cut.  Edam, Emmental, and other types were simply gone.  It was cheddar and mozzarella or nothing, and given that the mozzarella spiked about 25% I went for nothing, other than the big block of cheddar.  I can live without cheese.  When the price of things just get stupid I simply quite buying.  No biggie.

And I noticed that more and more people are starting to take their masks off.  They must have heard from Dr. Yong.  ????  I'd estimate that in the Big C building about 5% of those in the building were maskless.  Good to see people getting back to old normal.

When you live in rice-fields of TiiNoWhereVille Northern Thailand, exiting the village for a day trip to the "Big City" of Lamphun is excitement-plus.  Double-Plus Excitement if we go all the way to Chiang Mai!   Today is going to be Double-Plus Excitement!!!

I am going to pretend that was a typo and you meant no I’ll will nor anticipated tragedy.

I wish the OP many more trips to the grocer as entertaining and interesting  as this one, and hope that his last trip to the grocer is still far in the future.

I noticed today in Foodmart Jomtien, the price of fresh Pork as gone crazy, probably almost double to 12 months ago
