Chinese New Year: "Police work for the public not financial gain" - cops warned about accepting "Ang Pao"

Royal Thai Police spokesman pol Maj-Gen Achayon Kraithong commented on Chinese New Year and the results of 3 months of police work at a briefing yesterday, reported INN.

 

Achayon said it was that time of the year when people of Chinese descent in Thailand spend time with their families and travel and it was important that the Thai police ensured their safety.

 

Chinese New Year was not the time to take bribes.

 

Regarding accepting packaged "gifts" known as "Ang Pao" at Chinese New Year he said that individual police need to check National Anti-Corruption Commission guidelines.

 

"Police work for the public not financial gain," he observed. 

 

Meanwhile it has been a busy three months for the RTP what with the APEC summit in Bangkok, the World Cup and New Year.

 

Fom the beginning of October to the end of December there were more than 11,000 illegal weapons and ammunition cases resulting in over 10,000 arrests.

 

More than 12,000 people were arrested for football gambling and 1.7 billion baht in assets were seized. 

 

In the first two weeks of December nearly 8,000 illegal migrant workers were arrested on overstay.

 

There were 34 human trafficking cases and 64 arrests.

 

Crackdowns on drugs resulted in more than 69,000 cases and the arrest of more than 68,000 people.

 

Some 93 million yaba pills were seized.

When I was burglared a few years back the first thing the police offers ask how much I paid to find the thieves...And a friend who got killed on a motorcycle by a truck, his family had to pay 100k to get witnesses and a policereport... although the truck was surely wrong, but without no paying the RTp would not help

When you pay big money to get a low paying job there has to be a good motivation, yes? I bet tho it's not a desire to perform a public service. That certainly won't re-pay the outlaid money.

He's just saying what he's expected to say, without actually doing anything. It isn't his job to ensure what he says is acted upon. He knows that, the police know that and everyone else in Thailand knows that too. But he's done his job - without doing anything at all.
