Draft Prostitution Law To Set Voluntary Service At Minimum 20 Years

A COMMITTEE drafting a new law governing prostitution has agreed that voluntary sexual service without any criminal penalties should be allowed from 20 years of age, Matichon newspaper said this afternoon (Mar. 3).

 

Ms. Jintana Chanbamroong, head of the Department of Women’s Affairs and Family Development at Social Development and Human Security Ministry, said after presiding over a meeting of the committee drafting the new law that public hearings both online and on-site were held in five cities including Bangkok, Chonburi and Hat Yai.

 

Focus group hearings too were held before a conclusion was reached and a proposal tabled to Social Development and Human Security Minister Juti Krairiksh that a new law on prostitution be implemented.

 

It is initially called the Draft Act for the Protection of Sexual Services B.E. … and is planned to replace the current Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act, B.E. 2539 (1996).

Because they're from affluent countries and they're prejudiced against the realities of a country such as Thailand. In my honest opinion the women of Thailand have it very easy with the option of becoming a bar girl compared to men who can become the average builder. 1 really pretty country girl can earn in a week what a builder would earn in 5 months

In other words, legalising prostitution under certain conditions while protecting the rights of those who engaged in such profession, I see nothing wrong with the proposal.

It's about personal choice. Plant rice or implant tools. If I was a thai girl I'd sell my body, but unfortunately I'm not, and the only people who would buy my body as it stands would be Burke and Hare.  So back to the paddy fields I go.

A step in the right direction. Making this profession illegal, while turning a blind eye is nonsense. Just make it legal and regulate it. 

 

Most women who are in the trade don't have alot of alternatives. The pay scale here is so low, it is hard to support a family, for all but those with a specialized degree, or entrepreneurs. 

 

Making it legal benefits everyone.

Acknowledge this 'activity' as being unstoppable through penalty and other suppressive mechanisms.

Provide good free healthcare, nationwide contraception, far better single mother and orphan care, enforcement of patrimony when children are born and left here or there i.e supporting the cultural norm of families living together many generations but not allowing fathers to abandon their children through whatever mechanism they contribute to/create and leave women with babies with zero support, better social, economic, and educational transitioning for all of society not just the 1% who hold all the wealth in the nation.

Firstly I have no objection to prostitution - none at all.

 

But secondly, your post illustrates that what most of these girls do is a lifestyle choice.  One of my ex 's travelled from her hometown to work in a factory in Bangkok as many do and had a strong dislike of hookers - who she called lazy.

 

However, in some cases I think that's a very simplistic way of thinking.  I know of several who were more or less forced to go to work in 'the business' by their demanding families. Some of these families call it what it is, others call it working as a 'cashier' or 'waitress' - they know very well what the girls are doing but maybe it rests easier when called by an alternative name.

 

As I say, I have no problems with prostitution if that is what a girl wants to do but I have a massive problem with people forcing them to do it

 

I have never understood the pressure Thai families are able to bring to bear on their daughters but I have seen it in action so I know its real. Not just regarding prostitution but in many other ways.  Quite a lot of the guys here will not realise that if their wife's family told her to leave you and find a richer man - she may well do that.

 

It simply wouldn't happen here in the UK, I know exactly what my daughter would say to me, if I tried to make her do anything against her will.

Lax (non?) enforcement is said to fall on one single phrase, "...in a promiscuous manner...".

 

"Promiscuous" being open to interpretation by the "authorities".

 

Section five is also used for non-enforcement... "...in an open and shameless manner or causes nuisance to the public...".

 

So as long as you're not "shameless" or causing a nuisance you're good to go.

The usual myths and excuses, most are just too lazy or stupid to do anything else and has little to do with education, single mums status or so called impoverished areas. I have met girls with degrees or who have previously had decent jobs. In Mrs large Issan village one girl in the past is known to have become a prostitute, many ended up as teachers, civil servants, pharmacists or married well. Party life and laying on your back for large amounts of money will always be more attractive than study, work and a career to a minority.

I totally agree that voluntary prostitiution should be allowed. Even though this means, that women are allowed to financially abuse men, by selling what should be given for free.

What you say is true. But there are many countries where people live in similar circumstances, yet it is Thailand which has by far the greatest international reputation for the availability of prostitutes. Why, I don't know. It's much more a part of the culture. Maybe others in poor countries have a higher sense of morality, whereas Thais are more 'entrepreneurial'/too lazy than nationalities are to work hard for little money/see nothing wrong in selling themselves to get money for the latest phone.

Anyway, any move to dismiss the hypocrisy of denying that prostitution exists is a good thing.

In many other countries it indeed exists, veiled or kept  behind closed doors.

In Thailand it's in your face.

We all know the resorts and Sois that thrive on this activity...

It's widely excepted and encouraged as a means of employment for thousands directly and indirectly, adding to the GDP which the government needs.

Exactly. However, the root of this issue goes back to puritanical thinking that all sex is wrong for one reason or another..unless married. The natural act of sex is taken far too seriously in most cultures.
