Gary Lineker told to step back from presenting Match of the Day

Gary Lineker has responded on Twitter:

A final thought: however difficult the last few days have been, it simply doesn’t compare to having to flee your home from persecution or war to seek refuge in a land far away. It’s heartwarming to have seen the empathy towards their plight from so many of you.

We remain a country of predominantly tolerant, welcoming and generous people. Thank you.

Pure lass Gary, thank you too.

More virtue signalling tosh from Lineker ????.

They aren't being persecuted in France. They are illegal economic migrants that endanger their lives and others by making an illegal channel crossing that uses up taxpayers money that could be used to help genuine refugees.

It’s not about the migrants, it’s about the politically motivated censoring of Gary Lineker.

The BBC management have seen sense and U-turned.

Sorry that is such a disappointment to you, but it is what it is.

No surprise the BBC has backed down. If anyone needed any proof that the organization is full of spineless, pearl clutching, Labour voting champagne socialists who were no doubt secretly very proud of SJW Gary for comparing government policy to the Nazis, then here it is ????. Anyone who claims the BBC is a mouthpiece for the Tories is having a laugh - gaslighting pure and simple. This incident proves that beyond doubt.

I can only thank my lucky stars that I no longer have to fund that weak, unfunny, unoriginal, woke content. This sorry saga just adds to the BBC's lack of credibility. Hopefully it is defunded ASAP ????.

I'd can't stand Thai TV but I'd rather watch 2 women screaming at each other on a Thai lakorn, or 2 ladyboys hitting each other over the head to BOING noises than watch that garbage the BBC trots out ????.

My goodness, you’re having a bad start to the day.

The BBC manage have backed down because of the splendid response from Gary’s co presenters, public support for Lineker and the fact they know they haven’t got a leg to stand on.

I'm having a great day actually. Traffic was great to the office, the maid just brought me a nice coffee, now reading the news and listening to some hilarious virtue signalling on here ????.

The BBC backed down because they are a left wing echo chamber that clearly agrees with Gary. The saving grace is that thankfully I no longer have to help fund it.

He was being magnanimous in victory, as you should be in defeat.

How have I been defeated? ????

The BBC has made themselves look like mugs again. That's a win as far as I am concerned. I never expected them to do the right thing. It's the BBC.

Rightwing political interference and censoring in the BBC has been exposed.

Gaslighting again? ????

The BBC has been exposed as a weak, left wing organization with no backbone. This will advance the calls to have it defunded. Taxing people to be preached politically biased ideology belongs in North Korea/China and has no place in a modern UK.

It's an outdated model and needs to go.

The BBC has shot itself in the foot again :clap2:. Exposed.

Still, at least Match of the Day is back to normal.

The BBC has been exposed as the government mouthpiece, has been called out and forced to back down.

An example of complete ignoring the reality before you.

And of course hyperbole, North Korea/China, get a grip.

I never watch it. I prefer to watch the Premier league games live and the BBC lost those rights decades ago.

Yes, I have BT Sport and Sky for live games, plus the 3pm kick-offs on South African and Australian channels, but it's impossible to watch all of them over a weekend!  For me, catching up on all the games on Match of the Day on Sunday/Monday morning is essential viewing.  Even if you dislike Lineker's politics, there's no denying he's a superlative sports presenter and MOTD is a brilliantly put together 80 minutes of viewing.

Anyone has a right to an opinion but not a right to compare a policy to Nazi Germany where millions were killed - last time I hear the UK government were not suggesting gassing immigrants.

Lineker, multi-millionaire and Qatar hypocrite, should thank God everyday how lucky and fortunate his life has been and keep his mouth SHUT about Nazi Germany.

Sports and Politics don't go together

He is a sports commentator should stick for he is paid to do

If he feels he has to voice his personal options on Government policies

Then resign

Too late for that now.  He didn't have to resign and can continue to 'tweet' his thoughts.  It's called freedom of speech.

As has repeatedly been pointed out, he didn't make that comparison.

So we are allowed to compare Nazis with UK government policies?  what about commenting on Gays?  Islam?  anything goes?

Nobody compared any policy to Nazi Germany.

Actually I disagree. I find Lineker a bit smarmy (and not because of what I know about his views and his private life). I find Wright to be almost childish in his analysis and Shearer is a failed manager, very repetitive and full of the usual football cliches.

Personally I am not surprised the viewing figures went up when they threw their toys out of the pram. It seems I'm not the only one who finds their spiel irritating.

I heard viewing figures up 500,000 - Brits always find a way of making our voices heard amid the woke noise. If I was back in Uk I'd have done the same - put on MOTD to show support without overpaid Lineker.

Yes, I find it quite amazing how much these people can get paid for saying "that was a good goal" and "he will be disappointed with that" or variations thereof.    I find the football analysis provided by the content creators on YouTube significantly more insightful and struggle to comprehend why the BBC did not take the opportunity with this walkout to have a clear out and bring fresher faces in.

It doesn't need elite ex pros to present football highlights on comparable wages to what they were receiving for playing football where their real talent actually was.   Des Lyneham didn't have a football career and no-one would claim he wasn't an effective MOTD presenter because of this.
