Pattaya Police Bust Alleged Indian Scammer

An Indian man and his Thai wife have been taken into custody by Pattaya Police today for allegedly scamming multiple American victims of over three billion baht. 

 

Deputy National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Torsak Sukwimol, accompanied by a commando unit and officers from the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB), conducted a raid on a house in Pattaya’s Banglamung district today, March 21st, at 10 AM. The raid was prompted by a notification from the United States Embassy, which stated that the dwelling was being used as a hideout by scammers.

 

After searching the house, Gen. Torsak told The Pattaya News that he has arrested an unidentified Indian national aged between 50-60 years old and his Thai wife aged around 40-50 years old. The two have been accused of duping numerous American citizens of over three billion baht in total damages and had fled to Pattaya, according to the United States Embassy.

After having a family member swindled by a ruthless Indian call centre scammer, I have witnessed the devastating emotional and financial trauma that these pieces of garbage inflict. 

Plenty of YouTube videos of tech savvy guys who hack into the scammers computers (even the call centre's internal CCTV and audio!) and it reveals how truly evil these people are. They especially target elderly, vulnerable people and clear out their accounts, blackmail others by downloading and deleting files off PCs.  

I wonder how many of these Indian 'tourists' are here off the back of their criminal exploits. Hoping this Thai/Indian duo get to spend lengthy prison sentences.

A JOINT operation by the Thai police and US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Secret Service smashed a call centre gang operating from Thailand that has defrauded American citizens out of over US$3 billion, Naewna newspaper said.

 

National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Damrongsak Kittipraphat together with Pol. Gen. Torsak Sukvimol, the deputy national police chief; Pol. Lt. Gen. Worawat Watnakhonbancha, head of Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau; Pol. Maj. Gen. Warisiri Leelasiri, head of Immigration Bureau Division 3; Pol. Maj. Gen. Kampol Leelaprapaporn, Chonburi provincial police chief and the FBI and US Secret Service team had led raids on 36 targeted locations in four provinces – Chonburi, Rayong, Samut Prakan and Roi Et.

 

The key location is a single-storey house in Nong Prue subdistrict, Bang Lamung district, Chonburi province, where vital evidence was found including a large number of bank accounts, more than 10 mobile phones, four vehicles and a firearm plus ammunition.

Police arrest scammers posing as the FBI to lure Americans

 

 

Thai police coordinated with the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service to smash 36 call center gangs in Chon Buri, Rayong, and Samut Prakan and Roi Et.

The deputy national police chief Pol. Gen. Torsak Sukvimol led the arrest team, which consisted of the Special Service Division, also known as the Commando, Chon Buri Police, officials from the Anti-Money Laundering Bureau, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Secret Service, began operation on March 21, 2023

It is reported that police found several pieces of evidence at a particular house located at 388/53 Moo.10, Nong Prue sub-District, Bang Lamung District, Chon Buri. The team found several passbooks, more than 10 mobile phones, 4 cars and 1 pistol with bullets.

A couple Indian (obvious by their accents) "DEA Agents" just called me the other day in Florida

.

Said they'd found $290,000 worth of drugs in El Paso, Texas with my name all over it. I haven't been to Texas in 20 years. They had gotten my birthday from somewhere.

 

They wanted me to verify my bank account(s).

 

I played right along & told them all I had was a prepaid card from a day labor job I had worked about a year ago.....They hung up on me!

 

Spoil-sports I guess?

 

Oh yeah, the call came from a Florida phone number. I called back and got the manager of an apartment complex in Gainesville.

I'm sure when senior police heard that Indian scammers had settled into Pattaya with a 3 billion baht haul of money, they immediately jumped all over this case!

I saw on YouTube where such a scammer had accidentally called an FBI agent in the US. Long story short - scam didn't succeed but the conversation was entertaining.

My next door neighbours.Who would have thought.About 0630 I could hear a buzzing sound and I looked over the wall and there was a drone being ran by 3 belaclava clad commandos? Several vehicles on the soi.I could hear Thai voices and I think American accents. took a pic but was quickly waved off so I just remained in my premises until they went away several hours later. A little excitment on a very quiet area. Usually.

So that's how it works. I was wondering how posing as agent would enable a scam, now I understand better, although, like you, I would never fall for a scam like that. Thanks for input.

 

One scam I almost fell for was somebody hacked my friend's email account, contacted me and asked for money because he had been robbed in cyprus, injured and in a wheelchair (this was before line and the other chat apps). As I prepared the bank transfer I decided to try calling him by phone, He answered and confirmed his email was hacked and he was ok. The scammers had managed to impersonate his way of writing perfectly.

I had a call similar to that.   Got down to being threatened with arrest by the local Federal agent unless I paid a fine.  I asked if the local Federal agent was the one who lived on my block.   The guy said it was the guy.  I asked if I was going to be put in handcuffs and the caller said yes.   I told him I don't know if I could put handcuffs on myself, as I had never done that before.   He wanted to know what I meant.   That's when I told him I was the only Federal agent on the block.     He hung up.  

The good old days.  Been a retired Federal agent now for a little over 11 years.

These scam emails have become more frightening and threatening every day. Obviously, a few fragile people fall into their nets. These criminals need wiping out.

Since I have seen another scam now multiple times and actually younger persons I know have been convinced to transfer a significant amount of money, I would like to make a small report about this scam here too.

 

This scam does include “police officers” to call the victim with some detailed information on the person, work, family, … and then state that they have done something wrong. Once case was a false bankruptcy allegation and the other case was tax fraud. Both not true but they convinced the victims even if not true this would reflect negatively on them and it is hard to prove that they are innocent. This goes on with multiple calls and often more than one “police officer”. Then they convince the victim to settle this case and transfer XXXXX THB to an account so this problem would be solved.

 

Somehow they are very convincing and one of the victims I know works even at a bank!! Go figure!

 

Now funny enough the accounts which are used belong to Thai and they are located in Thailand with Thai banks. In the instances I know the Police is doing nothing neither is the bank because they would need the order from the police. Since the scammers “are fully dressed like police officers talk and act like police” speculations are allowed why nothing is done about it?

 

I would make everyone you know also aware of this scam going on!
