On the Penang Island side you could try the Bayview Beach Resort (they have a web-site) not cheap at 1900baht /night but has internet connection in room. I will go with you if your paying

Unless you have a distinct need for in room internet or laptop use (I used to need this service for specific banking applications) net cafes are plentiful and ADSL for 2R per hour...

I would say forget the laptop and use the cheaper hotels and net cafe services near Julan Penang / Chuila Liebh...

Wow you really do worry !!! Take a photocopy of the passport pages and carry that explaining that the passport is at the embassy..

###### I go everywhere without my passport even though I know it is a requirement I have never not been able to explain it to the satisfaction of whomever..

If you use an agent they can usually express clear it so your passport is back same day... Cost an extra 80R (but saves a nights hotel) but no success no fee.. Mondays are tougher I am told.. Midweek is nearly guaranteed to be one day service with the added charge...

No need to hide in the hotel room.. All can be organised and even if its not.. relax a little

If you do the visa application yourself you will receive a receipt from the Royal Thai Consulate.
