Far-right county throws out voting machines – with nothing to replace them

In Shasta county, a conservative stronghold of 180,000 in the far north of blue California, a new vision for elections is taking shape: paper ballots, no machines and results tallied entirely by hand.

 

It’s a vision predicated on the false belief that voting machines helped to steal the presidency from Donald Trump, and that the systems by which millions of Americans vote are unsafe. But in Shasta, they just might make that vision reality.

 

Shasta became a hotbed for far-right politics in the pandemic years, and election deniers have found allies on the county’s governing body, the board of supervisors.

Voting issues have always been discussed in the northern part of California.  I can understand it as my father worked in neighboring Siskiyou County as a Logger and Water tender driver.  He always did a mail in ballot, as well as the majority of his friends, they always believed the new voting machines were faulty at tabulating votes, IE..the famous Hanging Chad Incident.

 

That part of Northern California is what many refer to as The State of Jefferson.  Shasta County would be the States Capital as it holds the largest populace in the City of Redding.  There have been many attempts to create for a 51st State for a very long time.  The folks who live there feel that they have been written off and many voted for Trump.  They feel that their votes and sentiments go Un listened too.

With more costs to come, Shasta County will spend $950,000 on new voting system

Shasta County officials on Thursday approved spending $950,000 to hire a company to provide the equipment needed to hand-count ballots, something that hasn't been done in California in decades, at least not on the scale proposed in the county.

The Board of Supervisors' action comes even as elections officials try to develop a process that does away with machine counting and instead manually tallies ballots. County officials are also trying to figure out all of the costs associated with converting from machine counting.

Hand count is the way to go, check the ID's just to make sure they are legally registered to vote and not dead and burred. All of America needs to go this way just to be sure there is no cheatings.

This should be the gold standard, but in the new age folks want to know immediately upon the polls closing, and it has lead us to where we are now.  If all ballots were checked along with ID and checked off on the master list at each of the polls this would help, but it would be very time consuming, to time consuming for many with hidden agendas.  Look how long the hanging chad controversy took to eliminate in Florida so many years ago.  If that's the way things are to be done then elections need to be held in June of the election year instead of November to give time to count and recount as folks now wish.  Just my view however.

If in fact, there was a serious problem with voter fraud, you would have a better point. But there isn't. Five Republican states with Republican governors, Republican legislatures and Republican attorneys general, made big efforts to uncover voter fraud in their states. They came up virtually empty.

Nowhere did I indicate anything in regards to voter fraud, but I see where your going with that train of thought.  The point I am making is that if we did it the old way before todays issues, then the US could be seen as doing things which correct certain social issues.  Just for information, I received two mail in ballots this past voting cycle here in Thailand.  Had I returned them both might they have been both counted, or both thrown out by virtue of voting twice, just a thought.

Voting machines have been in widescale  use since the 60's.  And since this social issue is based on falsities, why dignify it with what would be a costly effort. And why would claims of fraud be lessened if they were adopted?  To believe that, you'd have to believe that those who falsely instigated these claims were acting sincerely despite the huge amount of evidence against them. As for you voting twice. No. There are codes on ballots. And even if they were from different states, is this a significant problem?

Good post and you hit the nail on the head with, "and since this social issue is based on falsities......". This because an overweight, dumb grifter couldn't face the fact that he lost the election, so he and his supporters carry on with this fallacy.

 

Despite them ranting and raving, there has been no proof of mis-counting of votes, but as with the "pizza gate" and "blood drinking" claims, the rubes continue to persist with the voting/counting machines false claims – – no wonder trump appeals to the "lower" classes, whilst at the same time enriching his buddies with tax cuts, because they can't see that they are being duped by a master at the art.

I'm not sure what you mean by your last question, but yes, there is a problem with people able to get ballots from different states voting more than once.  A number of snowbirds in Florida were caught voting both in Florida and in their home states where they also have an address.  I suspect many more did the same without be caught.  Since these are generally well-off conservative voters, Republicans don't make an issue of it.  https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/florida-three-arrested-vote-twice-the-villages-1271574/

To be frank, it doesn't matter to some people what system is used. Handwriting an X in a box on a piece of paper and relying on some person counting those votes, or machines that feed into a computer. What election deniers fail to appreciate is what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

 

Once someone in one party starts calling an election as stolen because someone from another party is verified as having won, it leaves the door open for the opposite to happen, later down the road.

And where exactly is that? So far nothing has come out of all the investigations into voting machines and election tampering. Nothing.

So I say we're in a pretty good place when it comes to election integrity.

The people who had an issue with the way the last elections were conducted were oddly silent when trump won in 2016.

IMO they attacked the result in 2020 and used the way that elections were held as an excuse. If there is a return to manual ballot counting they will come up with more excuses to attack results they don't like.
