The businessman had been recommended to the Liberians by a Laotian man and believed they could sell a kilo of gold for two million baht.

Current Price: ฿2,241,388 THB

Why try to buy gold at around the normal price?  Avoiding tax?

you sell it and make 12% profit......????‍♂️

"The businessman was left with the lump of almost worthless metal as security"
makes it all sound fishy though
like he was actually trying to buy something else....

The BIB step up and catch two easily identified suspects using CCTV with a nice pile of cash at their apartment. Sounds like a set up by Mr Laos. The Liberians will have time to work out the flaws in their scam/s.

When there’s plenty of currency floating around in a condo bib are quick at taking the matter into their own hands. The issue is how it will be distributed between bib and whether the Laos guy is going to get anything. I doubt it as his reward will be not going to jail.

1kg is $63,500 mkt price. Why would anyone sell gold for under half price unless it was either fake or stolen.

Agree. Scammers like that need greedy victims.

Buying gold for half of the price from an African or a top iPhone for 100€ online or sending money to Nigeria to earn millions - no sympathy.

Agree. Viet Nam actually has the death penalty for various crimes (mainly drug related) and will use it without hesitation.
