April 23, 20233 yr Does the free bus scheme of the past still exist. ???? To answer the Op's question. He should ask a local near him. Edited April 23, 20233 yr by VocalNeal
April 23, 20233 yr Popular Post If a person is relying on free bus transportation then they are probably in need of some financial assistance in order to survive. I hope I never get in that position. Good luck.....and here's to having a great day!
April 23, 20233 yr This is what I got from Bing chatgpt. That’s an interesting topic. I found out that there are some free bus services in Bangkok that connect the main public transportation lines with nearby tourist attractions, such as the floating markets1. There are also free shuttle buses and ad-hoc buses between the new Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal and Hua Lamphong station, which is the old railway station2. These buses are provided by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority to support the long-haul train services that have shifted to the new terminal2.

April 23, 20233 yr Popular Post 10 baht on ordinary non air buses, why would you want a free one? Glad they stopped as the mrs always wanted to wait for a free one, then complained they were full of poor smelly people.

April 23, 20233 yr Some people are money conscious, broke, tight-fisted, or just plain stingy. The OP’s query might be for reasons other than impecunity, who knows?

April 23, 20233 yr There is a free shuttle bus from Udumsuk to Ikea (Bangna) that I used a few times in the past.

April 23, 20233 yr There were some free buses but don't know if they're still running. They weren't all the buses on those routes so you'd have to look for the sign on the front. If you really needed a free bus, you could wait until one turned up on your route.
April 23, 20233 yr Popular Post Note that some Red non air-con buses are free. These free buses feature a sign (in Thai only) on their windscreens, at the rear and on the sides that says: รถเมล์ฟรี จากภาษีประชาชน (= Free buses from public taxes)
April 23, 20233 yr Popular Post Years ago I stepped into a (non-aircon) bus as I was in a hurry and when trying to pay, I was told that bus was free. It was a red bus with green line (government owned). That was running for several years, apparently, but that was my only time on one. I've seen them later though, and they have a Thai word for FREE on the plate next to driver. Now, from what I remember, that scheme was cancelled a long time back. There are some venues that offer free buses and boats still, and those that I know of are Asiatique has a boat from Saphan Thaksin, there are hotel boats like Hilton has free boat from Saphan Thaksin and from River City, many other hotels by the river have free boats to Saphan Thaksin, and so does (did?) ICON Siam. There is a free shuttle bus between Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports, but I believe you need to show onwards flight ticket to board. There are free shuttle buses from Huamark to Bang Sue train terminals. There's a shuttle between Ploenchit BTS station and All Seasons Place. And between Udomsuk BTS and IKEA/Mega Bangna. Those are at least what I've seen. But I doubt that's what the OP meant. I believe he was inquiring about the free bus scheme from 10 years ago or so, where several lines were paid for by the BMA to cover the whole city by free bus transport. That ended many years back.

I remember that it was even before COVID when BMA ended that scheme and I haven't seen any such bus since, at least in the area where I used to live. If they are still running, that would be good for the poor people in need to move around. And from photo of the pink taxi next to it, seems some may still be running as that's newer Corolla model than when I thought scheme ended. Ignore my post above, then.
April 23, 20233 yr Just searched for where my idea that this scheme ended came from, and here it is: The free-to-ride bus project was launched by the People's Power Party-led government in 2008 to help low-income people for six months. It has since been extended every six months by subsequent governments [SNIP] Free rides on selected public buses and trains will be extended for another three months, until the end of January, Deputy Transport Minister Ormsin Chivapruck said on Tuesday. This was published on 15 October, 2015. So basically, the scheme ended at the end of January, 2016.
April 23, 20233 yr Don't know about free bus service but saw the following about a free boat service.

April 23, 20233 yr Years ago there was a red bus that was free and ran along Sukhumvit past Nana 4 to Yaowarat. Useful. It could have been the 23 pictured by another poster but I forget.
