How Biden hopes to overcome his age problem

Featured Replies

Time waits for no man, the saying goes - and for 80-year-old Joe Biden, that could be a problem. Can the US president convince voters that his age is not an issue?

Mr Biden announced on Tuesday that he wants to serve another four years in the White House. Americans, according to a recent NBC News poll, aren't so sure.

The survey shows that 70% of Americans - and 51% of Democrats - think he shouldn't seek re-election. And it identifies one major concern for about half of those who want him to stand aside in 2024: his age.

Mr Biden is already the oldest president in US history. If he were to win re-election, he would be inaugurated at age 82 and finish his second four-year term at 86. According to US government actuarial tables, the average life expectancy for an 82-year-old man is 6.77 years, with an 8% chance of death within the next 12 months.

For the first time, an intervention - lifting weights - has been able to slow and even halt degeneration, over a long period, in brain areas particularly vulnerable to Alzheimer's disease.

Researchers have found that six months of strength training (lifting weights) can help protect brain areas especially vulnerable to Alzheimer’s disease up to one year later.

Too late.  I remember when 71 year old John McCain was derided by Democrats as too old, and therefore a risk as a candidate.

Avoiding debates is another sign of low confidence. As is avoiding the media.  It will be hard for the President to hide in the basement this time (as he did in 2020) or give speeches to empty rooms/parking lots.

He is just a brittle old man.

It's almost as if a 4 year age difference makes much difference. We all know it's about health and fitness, two adjectives which you can't apply to his opponent. .

If the opponent is Trump. Which is why, broken and brittle as he may be, Biden will beat Trump. Too much of the population has no toleration for any more Trump.

It’s about something else to, understanding how government works and representing America, not America’s enemies.

Biden’s health is a talk track that came out of Trump and his team in the aftermath of Trump being rushed to the Walter Reed hospital in the middle of the night to be administered the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test.

It’s the most obvious example of a Trump accusation that is in truth a confession.

And all achieved in the face of a Republican lead Congress that is bent on stopping all Biden’s initiatives, when not otherwise distracted by investigations into matters they themselves invented.

The only defense of biden it seems is, well look at Trump. It's painfully obvious biden shouldn't run again.

I thought he found doing that easy enough before.

By this time next year, the majority will vote for anyone but Biden.

It will require a candidate who isn't in the thrall of the gun lobby and isn't anti abortion and isn't burning books because of racial animus and bigotry. It will also require a candidate who supports Ukraine and isn't a Putin loving fascist. Given those requirements I'd agree with you. The chances are slim to none.

Actually it isn't.

He's the incumbent and he has a good record of accomplishments to run on.

Basically, Biden CANT overcome his age problem. It is a one way street. Instead, the best he can do is try to hide it. Which he already does by avoiding the media whenever possible, taking constant vacations at his beach house, having a very very light schedule, and so on.  Remains to be seen if these can still be done in a non-pandemic presidential campaign.

I like Grassley. Speaks lucidly and well, despite also being falsely smeared by the Democrats.

Strange I know. To hear them speak you'd think Grassley was the younger.

A cheat sheet held by President Biden during a Wednesday press conference revealed that the 80-year-old commander in chief had advance knowledge of a question from a journalist.

Do we really want a president who can't even take an off the cuff question without requiring a detailed cheat sheet.

This is important, and not only for what it says about the President's current state of mind.

It shows egregious collusion between the press and the president.  The press GIVES HIS STAFF the questions in advance. So far in advance that they can be printed on cheat cards, complete with the order he is to call on reporters and how to answer.  Obviously the so-called reporters are in on 'the game' to make the President look good.  It is all an act, a performance to give the false impression that Joe Biden can answer spontaneous questions. He can't, and it shows.
