A young woman driving a car in the wrong direction for nearly 3 kilometers on the expressway collided with a barrier, causing the vehicle to fall and result in her death. The other woman in the car sustained severe injuries.

Reporters today (April 30th) said that around 04:20 AM, police from Kannayao Police Station, Expressway Police Station 1, and rescue workers from Poh Teck Tung Foundation were alerted to an accident involving a car falling from the expressway. They rushed to the scene to investigate.

At the Chalerm Ratch Expressway near Jatuchote Road, a gray Honda City with the license plate number 1579 Bangkok was found fallen from the expressway, flipped over, and heavily damaged. Two young women were trapped inside the car, and rescue workers had to use cutting equipment to remove the doors and extract the injured victims.

The driver was killed as a result of being crushed by the car's console, while the passenger seated beside her sustained severe injuries and had numerous cuts on her face. Both women, whose names are unknown and carried no identification, were estimated to be between 20-30 years old. The injured passenger was rushed to Phumipol Hospital, reported Sanook.

Upon investigation, it was found that the car had entered the expressway near Sukhaphiban 5 tollgate, heading towards Phra Ram 9 Road. After paying the toll, the car made a U-turn and drove in the wrong direction towards the entrance of Jatuchote Road. Originally, this area had two lanes open for entry from Jatuchote Road, with the other two lanes being elevated. Authorities had placed barriers to block the elevated lanes.

Had the car been driven normally, it would have passed through two lanes before merging into four lanes after passing the barrier. However, since the deceased driver had been traveling in the wrong direction, she collided with the barrier, causing the car to fall from the expressway along with three additional barriers. The car had traveled almost 3 kilometers in the wrong direction.

Preliminary reports suggest that the deceased and injured women had previously visited an entertainment venue in the Hua Tai Rat area, where a Songkran festival event was held. Many people have expressed condolences on the deceased's final post.

Authorities will perform a detailed autopsy on the deceased, as well as test for alcohol and drug levels in her body. They will collect additional evidence before concluding the cause of this accident.

Looking at the photo it appears because of driving the wrong way she ran off of the end of the freeway.

I agree.

It couldn't have been much of a barrier. Looking at the photo and what is laying behind the workers, a piece of approx 12" x 12" concrete laid across the end of the road.

How did she get back through the toll booth?

And what WAS her last post, and more importantly WHEN?

I came that way not so long ago in broad daylight and thought how easy it would be to make that mistake, the barriers should be able to stop cars even getting close to the edge and looks like no lighting, these unfinished elevations are all over the place now.

Who thinks it's possible to U-turn across lanes on a motorway?

Here a picture of the section, she had to drive at quite some speed to make it through the second barrier after crashing into the first.

My bad, must have been another one as I was driving in the  right direction and the first 'barrier' was just frigging cones.

......and use the words "jaw-droppingly stupid" instead?

I agree /  a few weeks ago I passed on the Chaengwattana express way a car driving backwards (with flashing lights) about 2 to 3 Km further than the exit it had missed...This is a toll road and apparently they did not want to use the next exit and then return...

And we'll never know, will we, because we never get an update unless it's about a serial killer or a particularly crooked policeman.

Sounds it was more like speed and not looking where she was going than driving the wrong way

I use that section of the expressway every day. She was going the wrong way.

From the wreckage it doesn't look like seatbelts would have helped much.

Yes,it looks bad,but seatbelts will always help. You can’t defy the law of physics but It may have been the difference between death and bad injury ?
