In a devastating incident, a woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in front of wildlife officials in Wang Chan District, Rayong. Even after firing two magazines of bullets, the authorities could not stop the charging animal, which was extremely fast and caught everyone off-guard.

The tragic event occurred at a palm plantation in the district, where 40-year-old Namthip was fatally assaulted by an elephant. Police Major Saisawat Shinawong, an on-duty official at Wang Chan police station, was immediately informed of the incident and coordinated with local authorities, medical teams, and rescue workers to rush to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the wild elephant task force already guarding Namthip’s body and watching over the surrounding area to prevent the animal from returning.

Initial investigation revealed that Namthip had sustained multiple injuries throughout her body, including fractured ribs and broken limbs. The victim’s sister recounted the events of the evening when Namthip had ridden a motorcycle to her workplace, mentioning that about three to four elephants had entered the palm plantation.

So now there’s an African elephant, if thats the culprit in the photo:)),  roaming around with 20 bullets in him….guess he’s going to be really pi**ed now!

Far from convinced the automatic "must kill the animal" because it killed a human is really acceptable......rabid dogs...yes!

I see in Italy, vets have refused to assist in killing a bear that killed a hiker.

:coffee1: Why is it always those Africans? Now it's an African elephant, possibly on a visa overstay and living off sugar cane, bananas and romance scams on the side, without a work permit. Police better get to the bottom of this and deport.

Sounds like she was obese (as are many Thais these days). RIP but she might have survived if she was in better shape.

Or the officials had a better aim?

I have seen like 10 youtube videos about special "Elephant rifles" as they can't be shot with normal small rifles....They should hire Texas voluntairs + their guns....

"According to task force officials, the victim had called for assistance in pushing the elephants out of the plantation."

Also the incident could have been entirely avoided if they had simply left those elephants alone...

Well deduced Sherlock.

You should give the Thai lessons on elephant culture. You are obviously well versed with a lot of experiece on the subject

It surely didn't help, but charging elephants can reach 40kph, so even Usain Bolt would have to be on his toes..

Did they aim for the elephant, or not? 2 magazines must surely have done some damage.

Yes, of course, let them destroy the plantation and then she can live on zero income.

That must have been because the bear was a female. Had it been a male they would've shot him there and then.

Can't shoot an elephant.

Thairath news says shots were fired into the ground, also that in December 2022 a person was killed by an elephant in the same area.

I didn't know they had bears in the wild in Italy.

No, just the usual picture editing by a 7 year old child.

Or maybe someone thought that showing a Thai one might damage the reputation of Thai elephants?

How much of this problem is caused by too many people in the world? The destruction of the forests to grow more crops to feed ever more people is detrimental to wildlife of all kinds,if humans are going to remove animals sources of food there will be more accidents of this type.

RIP to the poor lady

If you have a plantation in an area where there are wild elephants likely to raid it......sinply put up electric fence.

From human laziness now there is a dead woman and an injured suffering elephant.

Zero.  You have no proof that there are too many people in the world.

As our gran would say, there's nowt worse than a death by rampaging elephant character assassination.
