Chonburi Police Commander Accused of Allegedly Extorting 140 Million Baht From Victims Over Online Gambling

Chonburi – The Chonburi Provincial Police Commander is being accused of allegedly extorting 140 million baht from victims over online gambling websites.

Six unidentified victims have filed a reported to the Kukot Police in Pathum Thani on Friday (June 16th). They told police investigators that the Chonburi Provincial Police Commander Major General Kamphon Leelaprapaporn and about ten other officers, most high-ranking, allegedly extorted 140 million baht from them.

 

The victims told the Kukot Police that they were arrested by the Chonburi Provincial Police for running illegal gambling websites, which they admitted to doing.

 

However, instead of being taken to court and going through normal legal processes they were allegedly taken by other low-ranking police to meet with the Chonburi Provincial Police Commander at the Chonburi Provincial Police Station.

 

They were then allegedly extorted money to allow them to “bury” the case. The Commander reportedly asked the victims how much they “loved him” in terms of money in order to drop the charges.

I think with the RTP, it would be safe to presume guilty, until proven innocent. This especially applies to a senior officer. The RTP at it's inception seems to have been created with a status quo from the government. We will NOT pay you a living wage, but you have a franchise, and the limit of your income is based solely on your own creativity and initiative, and you will always be protected. Is that not the case? 

 

There is one aspect of this, that always has to be taken into account. I think most Thais get it. But most foreigners do not. The police here own franchises. They are franchisees. They are not law enforcement officials. They rarely engage in law enforcement, traffic safety, or public safety. They are not here for the benefit of the people, and they are not here to keep us safe. They are here to collect. That is all they do. If you need to give them an official title, it would be that of a revenue collection agent. Only it is their own account, that they represent. Nobody will ever touch them. They are protected at the highest levels. They do as they please, and Thailand remains a relatively lawless state. And that is a huge tribute to the Thai people. Despite the relative lack of a deterrent, the vast majority behave themselves and remain civilized.

Maybe he will now have to ask how much he has to love someone to get off the hook.

Anyone  keeping track of just how many different news threads there have been in recent days here with various government officials / so-called civil servants being accused of involvement in various kinds of corruption? 

 

It's a pretty LONG list. And whatever makes it into the news is just the tip of a much bigger corruption iceberg here. It seems to be embedded in the fabric of government service here.

Don't you love Thailand. Illegal gamblers who don't even deny the charge then accuse the police of criminal activity.

 

But this is a clear indication of why Thailand will never have legal casinos (notice how talk of them has gone very quiet?) The police, along with 'untouchables', either run the illegal ones or make money from them,
