Boris Johnson's fate to be decided by MPs following damning partygate report

The Commons could now vote for Boris Johnson's right to enter parliament to be revoked, given the former prime minister has already resigned as an MP.

Former prime minister Boris Johnson leaves his home in London. Mr Johnson will give evidence as to whether he knowingly misled Parliament over partygate at a hearing of the Commons Privileges Committee in Portcullis House in central London. Picture date: Wednesday March 22, 2023.

MPs will today decide whether to sanction Boris Johnson after the privileges committee found he repeatedly misled the House of Commons.

The committee's damning report found the breaches were serious enough to recommend a suspension of 90 days - a sanction long enough to trigger a potential by-election.

However, Mr Johnson's decision to stand down with immediate effect means MPs will no longer be voting on his future in parliament but instead on whether they agree with the report, and whether he should be stripped of his access to the Palace of Westminster.

The former PM dramatically resigned this month, arguing a letter from the committee made clear "that they are determined to use the proceedings against me to drive me out of parliament".

Just 7 Tories voted to reject the report’s findings.

There we have it, 7 Tory MPs willing to vote in favour of Johnson.

Let’s have no more nonsense about Johnson making a comeback anytime soon,
