Chuan: Party With Most MPs Should Get House Speaker Post

FORMER prime minister and parliament president Chuan Leekpai said today (June 23) that the party that obtained the most number of MPs should get both the premiership and the House speaker post with this referring to Move Forward  which got 151 seats and Phue Thai 142 seats having tussled over the latter position, Matichon newspaper said.

 

Usually the largest and the second largest elected parties are on opposite sides of the aisle but this time they are both part of the coalition with this leading to a tug-of-war on which camp will get the House speaker post, Chuan said while registering as a Democrat MP at Parliament.

 

Regarding concerns that whichever party gets the House speaker post will have an advantage in proposing draft laws and motions, Chuan pointed out this has no effect as the constitution says that the speaker has to be impartial and in his 55 years of political experience he has seen that regardless which party the speaker belonged to he has generally been impartial.

In that respect, PTP will be the most qualified as the party has more MPs who are familiar with legal and Parliamentary matters. If the talks between the 2 major coalition parties failed, it will go down to decision by votes and most likely PTP will win. But I think both parties are trying to find a solution and maintain the cohesion. I am sure they are worry that the junta parties can still form a minority government and with support from the senates grappled the PM position. The feeling from the grassroots is that PTP may give the speaker position to MFP as they feel that Pita’s PM position is on highly shaky ground on the legal fronts and senates opposition. PTP

may see their chance for PM and allow MFP take the house speakership

Nice point, however this relies, up to a point, on opinion which will be 'coloured' by the claims of the parties involved.

This is incorrect. Move Forward has 151 seats, Phue Thai has 141.

You are right but sometimes politics a cronyism rules. We used to have impartial speakers in the UK until John Bercow took the post. He's been refused a peerage and banned from UK parliament for this and bullying.
