no-government-is-safe-opinion-Thailand_web.png

Politically, modern Thai history is on nobody’s side, but neither is the future. Therefore, a pretend and celebratory phone call to a late revolutionary reformist to say “We have made it” is a bit premature.

First, history. It has been a Jerusalem-style ideological fight with rivals taking turns gaining or losing control for decades. The euphoria flooding the Move Forward camp immediately after the May 14 election overshadowed the fact that the now-defunct Thai Rak Thai Party won 376 House of Representatives seats in 2005. That was far more than twice the size of Move Forward.

The Democrats captured 159 seats in 2011 but were unceremoniously placed in the opposition bloc. Pheu Thai secured 265 seats in that election but its government faced a massive and prolonged street protest and was finally toppled by Prayut Chan-o-cha’s tanks. The point is that even parties with bigger parliamentary numbers than Move Forward could not be guaranteed government leadership or stability.

Baloney.

Historically incorrect.

"Given that the Thai military has launched 22 coups, 13 of them successful, and initiated 20 constitutional amendments dance the country's establishment since 1932, the institution (sic) may look to another power seizure by force if its leaders are not happy of the May 14 (2023) election ... " ref. Mar. 25, 2023; www.thejakartapost.com

The new government and any succeeding it will be bound by a military-written constitution backed by an unelected Senate, a pro-military consitutional 20-year national strategy plan, authoritarian-like organic laws and a royalist-influenced judicial system.

At best one can only say that no 'progressive elected democratic' government can be safe from a decades- embedded wealthy, corrupt and politically unbounded Deep State.

It is not a Swamp in Thailand but a Gulf wherein Thailand's citizens hang on to the occasional democratic life saver ring.

cannot see how this may happen,  what happens if there is a new consitution as MFP are proposing, they already have said they will scrap the 20 year plan.

Just wondering how the military coups kept happening. Then I remembered who is the top

positions of the military. Never mind, just musing I guess. Since I became a senior I muse a lot.

And Thailand did excellent well with the military kicking out governments when they got too corrupt.

It is the best developed country in the region.

Thailand's problem is that it is in fact ruled and economically controlled by a tiny minority of society, with, additionally, a military that feels free to step in whenever they think it's necessary. And as long as a large part of society is fine with that not much will change.

True. A couple decades ago, Thailand and Malaysia were economically on par, but look where economically (and politically) Malaysia is today, and where Thailand (still) is... Perhaps in a few more decades Thailand will be the second-poorest country in ASEAN behind only Myanmar, unless things change politically.

I was never really convinced that he would become PM only because his party got the highest number of votes. Thai politics is much more complicated than this.

Dont think so !!!! Malaysia., Singapore. far more developed than thailand, there are plenty of far more developed countrys in the asian region, you need to do research before you post rubbish

Singapore is not really a country, more a state, or city state with privileges and strict control.

Thailand do very well for the region to be, no doubt about it.

You need to do research!!!!!  Singapore is a city, country, and sovereign island

A mostly fair & spot-on assessment of what is and what might be.

As much as the author rightly points towards how various schemes by certain parties ('schemes' as in 'scheming', imo....with rather negative connotations), are going on, in active & continuous flux, even as I type this.....I find something conspicuously evident & worth noting and that is how the MFP 'appear' to be, in any substantial way,  beyond the range of its opponents sniper rifles when it comes to accusations of disingenuous, underhand political hustle.....ie, ruthless, unprincipled scheming. I don't see this with MFP.

There are tectonic plates shifting around under Thailand's old rocks that are inexorably and irrestistably about to reformat themselves.

And the old bully boys know it.

Sir, you know it is not a real country! Do I need to look it up? Even it is a sovereign city state, it is not a real country even you like to think it is, just another trading port for the British empire who became a constructed soverign state. End of debate,

Singapore is just a city.

Malaysia: You have a point, but it has lots of oil and gas. You can't compare that.

For research: I am ready to learn from you: which one Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, if we really stretch it: maybe also Vietnam, Bangladesh and India is doing so much better?

You can't compare Thailand with Japan...that would be as absurd as comparing them with Germany

please post your apology

Look at the map.....it is a city....Google is your friend....google the size. It is half the size of Bangkok.

So there is no farmer, no large factories, no large infrastructure, they need to import everything, you can't compare that with a real country.

Your apology is greaty appricated.

It is a voting member of the United Nations!

A sovereign state is a state that has the highest authority over a territory. International law defines sovereign states as having a permanent population, defined territory, a government not under another, and the capacity to interact with other sovereign states.

Singapore is such a state.

legally it is a state....But it is just a city, you can't compare a city that has banks and some trade with a country that has power generation, farmer, trains, mountains, regional differences...with something slightly bigger than the Vatican .....That doesn't make sense. it is 1/700 in size of Thailand.

It is half the size of Bangkok, so it is not even a big city by Asians standards

IMO democracy is not what we get in reality, but IMO a democratically elected government ( Thaksin's ) was the worst thing to happen to Thailand in all the time I visited/ lived there.

I was extremely happy when he was deposed and only regret he wasn't tried and executed. He still continues to cause problems all these years later.

maybe not the worst ever happen....if you read what Europe did to Thailand in the past.

yes war against drugs, many extreme harmful laws, extreme corruption, sending troops to Afghanistan, etc etc endless list.

I would not have him executed but 20 years jail and seizing his wealth would be OK
