A POLICEMAN at Ron Phibun station in Nakhon Si Thammarat died after a drug-crazed man slashed his throat just as he was talking to him to calm down at around 11 p.m. last night, Naewna newspaper and Sanook.com said Saturday (July 8).

Pol. Sub. Lt. Boontham Kaewrat, deputy inspector of crime suppression unit at this station, upon arriving at the house in Khuan Chum subdistrict, Ron Phibun district, where Mr. Rapeephat (surname withheld), 28, was in a drug-fueled frenzy, tried to tell him to take it easy.

However Rapeephat suddenly charged at Pol. Sub. Lt.  Boontham and slashed his throat. He was later apprehended and taken to the police station.

They should have tasers for situations like this .

How to calm down a drug crazed person who is armed with a knife and threatening to use it ?

While I commend the police in Thailand for their stand-off stance against substance abusers instead of the USA "shoot first ask questions later" approach, they should use more caution when dealing with  people who are seemingly out of control.

Guess you've never spent any time in the US to make such a statement. I was there 62 years, and rarely saw a policeman pull out his weapon unless threatened with a weapon. Sold guns for years also, talked with thousands of policemen, hunters and regular citizens. If you count the actual police calls made and see, most keep their weapons holstered. Of course, some police are plain power hungry and unstable, just like everywhere, and they give the rest a bad name.

A shotgun blast to the head would rectify any drug crazed behavior….no need to re-enact as no crime was committed

the problem has been neutralized

Time for the police to review their procedures in such cases.

Would a taser have helped subdue someone in a drug fuelled (I presume Yaba) frenzy?

RIP.
