Free healthcare or not?

I'm married to a retired civil servant so maybe some differences.

When she was working, my wife always told me that health care was free for her immediate family, including her husband - me.

Now she's retired, every year my wife pays an insurance premium at the local(ish) Teachers' Bank office for healthcare on which I'm named as a family member. That entitles me to free treatment at the main teaching hospital in Khon Kaen. In 15 years I've never taken advantage of it but it's there if needed - I really should try to get sick soon and get her money's worth!!  I also get free treatment at our smaller local hospital - had rabies jabs there but nothing else. I'm registered at both hospitals. I think an annual health check-up is also available under the scheme.

My 90 y.o. friend is covered by the same scheme. He's had eye surgery, radiotherapy and other cancer treatment, all free, all very good.

I can't remember my wife ever paying a separate premium when working - maybe it was deducted at source or maybe I just wasn't so aware then.

Wrong.

My friend married to a teacher and he gets free private healthcare but strangely immigration wouldn't accept it as health insurance for his retirement visa

Private healthcare?

I believe it is the same as the said government workers healthcare, which is private. I couldn't swear to it tho

I'm married to a public servant and receive free healthcare under the close family scheme.

I can receive govt hospital treatment with referrals to private hospitals for MRI's etc if required.

For more serious problems like cancer I'll receive standard treatment but it's worth me using private cover for better treatment.

However it depends on what scheme the public servant is in. I'm told as part of cost cutting measures newer staff dont receive the same family privileges.

I'm already insured but I had similar problem applying for O/A visa overseas.

The company can't provide the required signed insurance certificate clearly indicating coverage limit and period, one year.
