Its true many people sre conned with fake ads and facebook do nothing to correct the problem.

If they are can't protect the subscribers then a ban would be in order until facebook take some action to protect people from the hundreds of scammers currently  on facebook.

Begs the question... is it facebook or the scammers who should be taken down... as usual in Thailand it's the inanimate object not the person who is at fault.

It would be interesting to know if there are proportionally more scam victims in Thailand than in other countries, and if so, what might be the reason?

Because Thai people are gullible. They believe in ghosts, evil and good spirits, lottery numbers. Then, if someone speaks with authority they believe

Or finally find a reason to get off there phones and revolt against this dictatorship controlling everyone's lives.

Great idea: Rise up and use your pitch forks against this murderous dictatorship (they only have a few F5's and F16 aircraft, VT4 Tanks, T84 Tanks, M60 Tanks + various other armour and equipment - nothing a few molotofs and ricebombs can't take care of).

Yes, rise up Somchai, rise up and take back what's yours.

Not gonna happen pal, Thailand has very little that would entice anyone with the cash to arm the masses. Any serious rebellion would be put down immediately. I agree that banning Facebook is likely to create mass protests but a revolt? Naa.

It is difficult to answer your statement/question with a yes or no so I am going with a maybe simply because the future is not here yet but still in the future if it was here one could simply say yes/no because one would know the answer already but if you hold some of your dry grass in the air and let it go you could see where the wind is blowing from and no matter what we are all screwed already we just don't know it yet.

Yes, only the local networks are permitted to cheat everbody in Thailand and not those awful farang networks. So next step will be to ban Google and Apple also ?

How would all the Thai scammers premote their scams

I don’t care for the FB site, however rather than trying shut it down, find a way to tax it’s users or pay a user fee in Thailand.

They could always get Interpol involved, however it did not work for the Red Bull Brat, so little chance it would discourage freckle face.

Not a clue on how things work in Thailand.

"That threat was over website links providing incorrect “misinformation” according to the government that Thailand demanded to be removed."

Did the government want correct "misinformation" then?

Bit of a misnomer there... Should it not be either "incorrect Information" or just "misinformation" only?

Like the way fake ads and military junta are used in the same sentence but its only important to ban Facebook priceless  ????

Good move shut this rubbish down. You want Thais dumbed down even further, allow FB to continue here. You want a chance of improvement, shut it down, shut it down.

A few years ago Facebook could not be connected to from Thailand for about 25 minutes. People went crazy! I dread to think what would happen if it was permanent. Then the government will really see what it is to have the population turn against you.

About as far from being Russian as is possible and I know exactly how things work in Thailand.

Firstly, its unlikely that this guy will get the courts to ban Facebook. Secondly, if he does, there will be some protests but anything more serious will be put down brutally.

I was in Ratchaprasong on the skywalk in May 2010, I've seen what happens when the Thai Army calls time on demonstrations and riots first hand - have you?

You wanna see a rebellion in Thailand, just try taking away their Facebook. ????

He's right though,

The sponsored ads that are obvious scams are just allowed to run by FB and something should be done about them.

Close Facebook down does that mean Instagram and what's app?

Chaiwat said complaints against users being scammed on Facebook to police were regular and that as Facebook was not taking action on their end

A big part of the scams is Thais using the culturally and educationally ingrained behaviors like blind, unquestioning obedience to perceived authority to take advantage of other Thais. Yet the government has not taken action on their end to foster critical thinking in society...

In a late afternoon press conference on Monday, August 21st, 2023, Thailand’s Caretaker Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaiwat Thanakamanusorn stated that his ministry is planning to seek a court order to shut down Facebook in Thailand for allegedly failing to take action on numerous scams, frauds, and fake ads created by users.

The Minister stated that the Digital Ministry has tried numerous times to work with Facebook on removing and taking action against scammers using its platform but claimed the company had not taken any meaningful action.

Chaiwat said there have been over 200,000 victims of fraud on Facebook from various ads, fake marketplace scams, and other fraud. This totalled over ten billion baht in financial damages to users affected. Chaiwat said complaints against users being scammed on Facebook to police were regular and that as Facebook was not taking action on their end, according to him, Thailand planned to seek a court order to legally shutter the service, joining countries like China and North Korea.

This is not the first time Thailand has threatened to ban Facebook, as a similar threat took place in May of 2017 by the then Military Junta led by Prayut Chan-O’-Cha. That threat was over website links providing incorrect “misinformation” according to the government that Thailand demanded to be removed.

People INTERACT on it, not gossip. And I've found it very useful in my business for being able to contact people. I've also been able to use it to contact old friends and to video chat with people I know, including family. The fact that you, clearly, have no idea how to reap the benefits of it doesn't mean that it isn't useful to billions of others. There are reasons so many use it, even if you are unable to see them.
