Horrific Accident: Trailer Collides with Motorcycle, 3 Dead

A horrifying accident occurred as a trailer crashed into motorcycle, resulting in the death of three teenagers on Highway 22, Bangkok.

 

The victims, two males and a female, were riding on the left lane behind a stationary 6-wheel truck. Attempting to avoid the parked truck, they swerved right, coinciding with an oncoming 18-wheel trailer, reported Thai Rath.

 

Witnesses disclosed that the motorcyclists were trying to avoid the parked truck and were subsequently hit by the trailer, around 2:00 PM on August 21.

 

The victims were identified as Ekara Lapa, 20, the motorcycle's driver; an unnamed female, Ekara's girlfriend; and Petchada Pratangakato, 14, a friend. Police and rescue teams rushed to the scene, while the trailer's driver, Somkiat Cheuklaong, 49, was taken in for questioning.

 

Preliminary investigations indicated that the parked trailer belonged to Kaewmuang Petchakankhong Transport Co., and the driver claimed he had stopped for less than two minutes before the accident occurred.

 

The victims' bodies were sent to a local hospital, and the investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause and sequence of events leading to this tragic incident.

Parking on the right of way is standard in Thailand... so is three up on a scooter built for one (maybe 2) with face masks but no helmets.

Clearly, if the scenario is as described, the moto driver is at fault as he (she) attempted to pass a parked truck without making sure it was clear.

Most Thai driver and moto riders, veer into the next lane giving a huge berth on the off side,  if there's an vehicle parked or going slow.

Never thinking of slowing down, they just move out. So stupid!

Unless it a was a very narrow road, it should have been enough room for 2 trucks and a motorcycle to pass, i should know because i come across such scenarios almost every day, the only way that accident could have happens as if the rider took a wider berth than it was necessary to over take the parked truck.

Correct. Just pulling out is normal for motorcyclists, isn't it. And doing so at the last minute instead of looking ahead and giving themselves time to check it was safe to do so. Which clearly they didn't. No traffic awareness.

Trucks parking on roadsides are a pain in the backside, but, having said that if you have to manoeuvre around one it's best to look around first.

It strikes me as ridiculous how in Thailand the inanimate is always blamed to avoid pointing the finger of blame at any individual...

 

In this case the 'trailer' did not crash into the Motorcycle, but the motorcycle rider swerved into the trailer of a passing lorry without looking, causing his own death and that of his two passengers. 

 

When on the roads here, as motorists or motorcyclists, we've all seen it time and time again - other motorcyclists changing lanes or pulling out without looking, undertaking a left turning vehicle, overtaking a right turning vehicle, jumping lights etc...  

 

... the lack of self preservation never ceases to amaze me - I ride a motorcycle here (and drive a car) and when out on the roads I see motorcyclists carry out manoeuvres my own sense of self preservation would make a physical impossibility...  It'd be like stepping into a fire, something our sense of self preservation makes impossible...
