UPDATE:

THAKSIN WILL STAY IN PRISON MEDICAL WARD

After a medical check-up, the Department of Corrections stated that former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, 74, has five medical conditions. He will be held in a separate medical ward within the prison and monitored by medical specialists.

The five conditions include ischemic heart muscle, chronic pulmonary inflammation, high blood pressure, degenerated spine, and abnormal posture.

The food he receives in prison will be provided solely by the prison, and his visitation privileges will adhere to the same rules as other prisoners. However, only his lawyer will be allowed to visit during the first five days of his incarceration.

#Thailand #ทักษิณ #ทักษิณกลับไทย

No aircon, just fans, his lawyer will be busy sorting out the pardon which has to go before the PM. first after he recieves royal approval

It's pretty clear why he had to land on the same day as the PM vote. His safety and eventual freedom are collateral against PT doing anything to rock the boat. Thaksin under lock and key was the precondition for senators rubber stamping their PM candidate.

Expect a long, drawn-out pardoning process, and once Mr. T. becomes a free man again, expect some other daggers to materialize to hang over his head (Revival of old court cases? New charges for past actions? Take your pick). Just don't expect a "PT-led" government to be able to do a single thing that hasn't been blessed from on high.

I think the pardon will take a week or two, after the PM elect receives royal approval, then in a few more months Yingluck will receive her good news. I think they will use the 17 years in exile as punishment enough.

Is the trade off worth it?

Lets see how the election turns out,it could be a disaster for PT.

Everything in Thailand is all for "cho" (show). The staged overturning of the election results...the insertion of the predetermined PM...the return of this criminal...and this 8 year sentence. All for show. He'll likely be out in 8 days.

Remember 2008, he was allowed to escape and go to the Beijing Olympics on his word he would return to face charges. Everyone with a brain cell knew he wasn't coming back. He should be given 15 years lockup just for that, but again it's all planned and just a big show to fool the gullible masses, of which there is no shortage here. :coffee1:

You got to the level of being privvy to the most discreet workings of the Thai Penal system, as it applies to the very highest and wealthiest echelons of the establishment?

Remarkable!

BANGKOK, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Thailand's former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who returned from self-exile on Tuesday, will serve a total of eight years in prison, according to a statement by the Supreme Court.

The jail term covers three different cases for abuse of power and malfeasance, illegally ordering a state-run bank to issue a foreign loan, and illegally holding shares via nominees.

This statement is untrue.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on May 15 2013 presided over the ceremony to mark the end of shackling inmates with iron chains and bars at maximum-security Bang Kwang Central Prison in Nonthaburi, ending a century-old practice which draws ire among rights groups as a human rights violation.

This statement is untrue.

Personal experience or hearsay?   It is not untrue, the general prison population in Thailand is not shackled, some may be when they are taken out of the prison for court appearances, etc.

Yes, I did.

If there were such places why are so many convicted, previously influential people in what you would have to class as "normal" prisons and do you really think that it would be possible to keep the existence of those "special" places a secret?

That's B.S.

How would you know, personal experience?  Got anything to back up your BS "BS" such as naming the prison that shackles all the inmates?

Lou, you keep dropping teasers, Story Time please

Let's just leave it at I do know what life is like in the same prison that Thaksin was sent to and the information is first hand, not hearsay, nor gleaned from television series, books or some AN posters' misinformed views.

As I said, remarkable that you as a foreigner were allowed to have insight into the goings on at that level.

It is not, of course, that I don't believe you.

The funny thing is, if he had done his sentence back then, he'd be free already for almost a decade.

Having said that, I don't think he's gonna do 8 years because he wouldn't have come back for that. There's definitely some kind of deal in  place.

8 years, I give it less than 8 hours... he'll play the sick card, get taken to a hospital wing, get a sick note from an obliging consultant and be home for breakfast.

If he had gone into the prison system he would likely have succumbed to a "sudden blood disorder" within a few months.
