Root canal or dental implant

Can anyone recommend me a good place for a root canal treatment for one of my back molars?

 

Alternatively, is it possible in Thailand to get a dental implant instead? This I would prefer over a root canal.

Any good experiences with either treatment?

it is possible but is dependent on other factors such as bone density etc.

 

any dentist worth his salt would always recommend root canal followed by a crown as your first port of call.

Nonsense with your bone density, that is for people who took their teeth out and never took implants a long time, then the jaw shrinks.

Not sure what you are saying, these have little to do with each other. Cost wise you are also talking about 5K or 50K in costs. Implant would also take multiple procedures and time in between.

 

Why on earth would you consider an implant if all you need is a little root treatment, grow some balls.

Why would you imagine that it takes more ‘balls’ to have a root canal and crown? A really weird post…

RCT would also require a crown and have a limited life.  If location/bone allows believe most doctors today would recommend implant.  The cost difference is not that great - RCT/high gold crown will cost 30k or more most places and implant about 60k.  Implant may take few months however so if time not available RCT would be choice.

Almost everybody can get implants but some need q bone graft. It's not uncommon for the bone to be too thin especially on top.

 

When I had my implant, the first dentist wanted me to have a major bone graft. It would have taken 7 months and cost 50,000 a tooth. Another dentist told me I would need a sinus lift, a more minor procedure that would have cost 20,000 or so. I went to a third dentist and he said no bone graft necessary. I went with him. That was two and half years ago and it's been fine so far more or less.

I have had 3 implants, and can vouch for them. Two are nearly ten years old.

Beware of any dentist who promises an implant within a couple of weeks, they have a high failure rate. A proper implant with maybe a bone graft takes several months, the success rate is 95%.

I have had 4 implants, 2 with bone craft.  Very happy with them. 2 of them were former root canals where eventually caused the tooth to deteriorate and became painful so implants.

Root canal, would be my choice, keep my teeth.  Why take a fixable tooth out ?  Along with (root canal & crown) at least half the cost of an implant.  If you don't need the crown, even better.

I'm just worried about the tooth eventually failing anyway. Mine has gotten a few successive fillings along the way, to replace the original one, with for each filling more of the original molar having to be bored away, to the point that the molar is now more filling than tooth.

I'm in my mid-40s and would like the fixed - or new - tooth to last me as long as possible.

I'm not scared of the dentist's, but it's not exactly my favorite place either.????

I have a couple crowns (w/root canals) that are 30 yrs old.  Implant option will always be there, if needed.

I have been using a superb, excellent English speaking Dr in BKK for over a decade.

 

She has a clinic that deals with falang's and is a superb dentist both diagnostically and results.

Her work is second to none.

Ridiculous question to ask in hindsight considering that you have not included any dental history, no photo of an xray etc. Do you want to listen to a bunch of armchair warriors or go and see a dentist in Thailand and get a proper diagnosis.

You have no idea. Same day implants are possible but depends on a number of criteria being met- as any dentist will tell you. 

 

Your last sentence is a bit off as well. Bone grafts and/or membrane are used when necessary- after the dentist has taken a look at a CBCT / 3D xray. Not all cases need it

Frankly, you don't know what you are talking about. My implants were done by Professor Dr Somjai and by Professor Dr Kiatanand for the bone graft, both in their fifties with decades of experience, also Professor Dr Somsak, and the Root Canal Specialist is also highly capable. These are personal experiences.

IMO you better save your own tooth rather than planting something lifeless unless you have no choice. But do this with a dentist who has a good review, not only by "one review" who had been happy with own dental work.

Btw, I live in the south, but would be willing to travel to Bangkok for a reputable dentist for a root canal, if the treatment wouldn't necessarily require returning.

Where in the south exactly?

 

RCT often involves multiple sessions and then you need to return to have crown fitted.

The RCT often requires a return to complete cleaning - then a session for a metal shaft in most cases (to make strong enough for crown) and then another for crown and then perhaps follow up.  But RCT should be available at most dental offices.

Very close to Malaysia, so not in a foreigner-heavy area. English is not common here.

I am not sure if I trust the local clinics with such an important procedure tbh.
