Is it better to educate a half thai half farang in Thailand or in the west?

A lot of us farangs breed with the locals. 

 

And it seems to be the general consesus is that the schools are not good here in The Land of Smiles (despite choosing to breed and falling in love with women who were actually educated in these schools} and that these offspring would be better off studying in the west and learning "western ways".

 

I think i might have to disagree.

 

The Thais might not learn much about things of which are little use in real life. Like geography and world history. Useless subjects really.

 

But they do seem to learn very good manners which includes not making someone lose face which seems to grind at many westerners and most importantly 'greng jai' which many westerners dont seem to understand at all.

 

And they seem more at peace with themselves and each other.

there s a lot to be said for teaching your child what they dont hget at school. During the covid lockdown, any spare time with my son was spent picking up words of Spanish from you tube, we made a huge timeline of world history for his bedroom wall. learnt a lot myself.

ANY education for ANY nationality will be the better for a year schooling in another country. My granddaughter will certainly be going to the UK for at least a few months when she has finished her technical school here. Her English is very good but needs rounding off with a taste of every day English usage. I sent one son abroad from Switzerland (to Spain) during their formal education and despite not using Spanish much the experience was valuable.

Manners are an important part of any education. But this is what you learn at home and probably not so much in school.

 

However as well important is what is called "common knowledge". The basics of physics, math and all that stuff. For this part it might be advisable to get your education not in Thailand but abroad. Not to talk about any higher education like electrical engineering and alike on university level.

 

I have learned as well in my now 68 years that languages are of utmost importance, I speak a few and it has helped a lot. The best might be that the child grows up in an at least 2 language environment at home.

 

So my advice: At least some years should be spent outside of Thailand in a renown environment - if you can afford it.

Good education is about an individual learning to teach themselves. Most US schools have turned into obedience training camps fueled with a political bent as opposed to independent learning, can’t speak for other western countries. S. Korea have good western schooling all focused on education without the political nonsense, and it’s by far the most westernized Asian country. If I were to send a kid to college, it would most definitely be a school in S. Korea

It's got to be the west, then come back to Thailand with much better education than locals, remember the best doctors and specialists are trained abroad

I think you need to tell us how many SK kids study ( undergrad/grad) in the USA and vice versa?

 

Then ask yourself why is that?

Thai's and good manners?    You obviously don't drive in Thailand,    the most impolite people

If:

 

Top international school or a state school in The Bronx, Thailand would be better.

 

A school in Cambridge or a Thai government school in Chainat, the West would be better.

FWIW, from my personal experience with a friend and her 50/50 son, being educated in a private school in Bangkok, the Thai kids and even the Thai teachers to some degree, have a problem with 50/50s and there is a strong tendency to discriminate against them and harass them. Other countries seem to handle this better. Unfortunately, this leads to a lot of hard feelings and embarrassment. Of course, the same can happen anywhere but seems excessive here. He's a top student, which probably aggravates the situation.

I have found Thais in their 20s educated for 2-3 years abroad are more comfortable in their own skin and are more confident in general. How their countrymen find them is a story which I can't answer. Being educated for some time in a western country under western values (which do still exist to an extent) is obviously a given as far as broadening the mind and instilling an understanding of pushing horizons. Thai fatalism, or call it just being happy with your current position, is a hindrance to advancement. I know a young Thai/Brit studying to become a doctor in Bangkok and she will probably travel to Europe for specialisation.

Felangs do not fall in love with Thai Woman for their intelligence and deep meaningful conversations  .

You could have referenced the PISA educational tables to inform yourself of Thailand's lowly and worsening position in the critical subjects. And if you think History and Geography are "useless subjects " that only points to your own  poor comprehension (and education?) . Perhaps you also think the appalling numeracy of the average Thai ,along with poor English skills is a worthwhile sacrifice for those other dubious qualities you reference? 
Thais are let down by the poor education system and lack of awareness of the world outside/global issues because it suits those in control to keep them that way.

I think there would be more options and opportunities for them if they were educated in the west. Whether they are happy or not is another question. But I don't think we can make the judgement that they will be happier having a lesser education and not knowing so much about the troubles of the world.

15 years ago I would have said go westeast or any country non African Asian.

 

Now I am not so sure.

 

Looking at the cost associated with putting your child in can/uk/ us/ aus and the current state of public schools I think it is more likely your child would get a better education for the money here at the real private schools.

I move to Thailand when my daughter was starting 2nd grade and I just retired from the USAF. Most private schools were high cost even way back then 33 years ago. ISB was out of my range but I could just barely afford RIS. I look for 2 1/2 years for a job; I really needed the extra money. I finely found a real good paying employment the US Embassy, worked they 15 years.  My daughter had a real good education which prepared her for collage in the US,10 years of college and four degrees later BS, 2 MS and Phd. She married and lives in the US, has good employment and comes here at least once a year. All but one of my other children from earlier marriage have college degrees. I was the first one in my family to finish college, even though I dropped out of HS and joined the AF, so I believe in higher education in a good Wester college.
