Heartbroken British mother accuses Thai officials of ‘lies’ in son’s alleged suicide in Thailand

A British mother slammed the Thai authorities as “liars” after they informed her of her son’s alleged suicide in Thailand. Darnel Kimbia was reportedly found dead in a Bangkok car park on Sukhumvit Soi 50 on Thursday, September 7 with a suicide note lying by his side.

 

The 24 year old man from Brighton had been travelling in Thailand for a number of months before making his way to the Thai capital.

 

The dead man’s mother, Charmaine Baptiste, informed the Brighton Argus that she received calls and emails, from Bangkok, written to her in Thai, which had incorrect dates, informing her of Kimbia’s alleged suicide. Baptiste does not believe her son killed himself and wants the UK police to investigate.

 

“I feel like it’s a lie, my son would never do that. He wasn’t suicidal. He had his whole life ahead of him at 24. He was educated, he had a good graduate job. He had no reason to commit suicide.

“I feel sick to my stomach. I’m trying to stay strong because I want answers. I want justice and I want to find out what actually happened to him, I won’t be able to sleep until I do.

Depression's a tricky thing. A person can come off looking happy to everyone, even those very close, and be hiding a dark cloud that hovers over them. Going on vacation is one way of coping, but you can't escape from yourselves. it has to be dealt with with therapy and possible medications to help with the symptoms. I can understand the mother not thinking her son was suicidal, and wanting an answer, so it is a good idea to investigate thoroughly, especially in a place known for lies and coverups. Living in another country won't make this easy.

People that take their own lives are suffering from depression most of the time. It can be an episode that just came on from a recent tragedy, and the mother doesn't say much besides "He wasn't suicidal", which most people never know until it happens, as suicidal people , those that are really going to do it, don't usually tell others beforehand. Those that are thinking of it, because they are having troubles, will tell others close to them that they are feeling down, and might mention it, wanting help but not knowing just how to get it. If it wasn't a recent tragic episode of loss or some other problem, then he might have had depression for a long time. People with depression have many ways to self medicate. Buying things a lot, having a lot of sex, drinking, drugs, over sleeping, eating very little or a lot, bouts of unwarranted anger and others.

Surely the mother should be able to identify her son's handwriting in the suicide note. Believing that the note was only done under threat from another party might be a bit of a stretch.

Exactly! Take Chester Bennington for example. 6 days before he hung himself he did carpool karaoke with James Cordon. I've seen that episode, he seemed totally normal, was joking around in a seemingly good mood., habing a good time. His wife released a family video of him and his kids playing a game that was shot one day before he killed himself, and again no indicators of what was about to happen whatsoever. Depression is a massive b..ch!

You've been around for quite a while - what on earth would give you the belief that the Thai police still have some integrity left in them in any circumstance whatsoever? You demand that we provide you with evidence of the police incompetence or malfeasance in this case? How on earth would one do that? Do you think that this happens in Thailand as a matter of course? I thought you lived here.

I presume that when the two Burmese fallguys were presented as the murderers of the British woman, that you were totally on board with the police investigation and result? Did that satisfy your criteria for addressing the requirements of the grieving mother? Actually, could you just point us to a proper investigation of a single instance of a foreigner's death here so we could see one example of proper police investigation and conduct?

Your so clever you clearly don’t realise just how clever you are. What worries me more is who is going to treat you for believing any utterance coming from the Thai police.

Yes, and Robin Williams is another example of someone who put his depression aside by being an excellent comedian, all the while hurting. My best friend took his life back in 1987, before much was known about treatments and medications, and he had a very good life if you looked at it from the outside. Good wife, house, car, job, hobbies, friends, good family, and class clown, which was his way of putting his own hurt out, along with sleeping during the day a lot.

On a general view, only a fool or a liar would claim that the red tape or bureaucracy say with immigration or administrative issues are simple and transparent in Thailand.

As suggested above, clearly the handwritten 'suicide note' holds the answer to the questions ... If the note has disappeared 'gone missing' by the time the UK cops & Embassy start to lift their little fingers, then we & the mother will know the answer.

No "cause of death" is being recorded and no mention of a postmortem - that knowledge would help a lot of people including his Mother,

 

Suicide is not so much a cause of death as the method used. A real Doctor should be able to find this - as in overdose of drugs or external indications of obvious self harm or by a third party!

 

In general terms, a suicide note is reasonable evidence to work with by Police and Forensics!

 

Cynicsim regarding the incompetence or a "cover up"of RTP is unfair, as this is a matter of International concern and should be treated carefully to avoid unnecessary escalation.

Having worked in Psychiatry for many years and with suicidal people. It is a very difficult to stop someone if they’ve made up their mind to do it. Usually it’s after coming out of a depression. When depressed the individual would usually have pyschomotor retardation, making it

difficult for them to carry out the act.

So in this case it would be valuable to know what he’s been like for a few weeks leading up to the incident.

Another point, from experience, a UK Coroners Court would only give a verdict of suicide if a suicidal note is left and forensic proves this as well as proving he wasn’t under any pressure to write such a note.

Having said all that, alcohol and drugs, cannabis, now widely available can lead to psychotic reactions/ irrational thoughts. Not sure of all his history!

very sad and tragic such events requires sensitive handling and support for those left behind. Often relatives are in a state of denial and look to blame others. Not saying this is the case here, but a fact that I have encountered.

Because if this person did commit suicide and did so in a car park, (and if the body had not been moved) then that's where the body would be found.
