Former deputy interior minister sentenced to nine years in prison

Former deputy interior minister and former Democrat MP Nipon Boonyamanee has been sentenced to nine years in prison by the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases, after being found guilty of malfeasance over the procurement of two multi-purpose trucks, worth about Bt51 million, by Songkhla Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO).

 

The court also revoked his right to contest elections for five years.

 

The offence was committed in 2013, when Nipon was then the mayor of the Songkhla PAO. Nipon refused to pay the Ponlavit Tech Plus Company, which won the bid to supply the PAO with the two trucks, claiming that the company had engaged in price collusion.

Convicted crimials can not stand for parliment. Why ban him from elections for five years and not a lifetime ban?

It seems to help in political careers in Thailand, if you're a crook and, as other esteemed members of the sitting government prove, once you're out of the slammer you can end up as agricultural minister. How that all works though puzzles me daily ???? ????

Fair does; it has taken them 10 years to get this far.  Then there'll be an appeal; then another.  Then he'll be dead.

I am under the idea that ALL appeals should be done from prison after the first conviction. There should also be a set daily amount of reparations that you get should you be found 'innocent' on appeal.

So it took 10 years to find him guilty? Justice delayed is justice denied: it acts both ways. 9years and he'll be out on bail tomorrow for another 10 years while the appeal is heard. Sickening. 

 

Large scale corruption is usually in the procurements department's. Why can we not have a special investigative team to investigate any procurement over 100,000 baht?

They probably know he'll be out in 6 months, same as Thaksin will be.
