US moves warships closer to Israel after Hamas attack

The US says it is moving an aircraft carrier, ships and jets to the eastern Mediterranean and will also give Israel additional equipment and ammunition.

It follows the Hamas attack on southern Israel, which President Biden called an "unprecedented and appalling assault".

The US was also working to verify reports its citizens were among those killed and taken captive, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said.

Israel says more than 600 people have been killed and 100 kidnapped.

In Gaza, at least 313 people have been killed following retaliatory Israeli air strikes, according to Palestinian officials.

US defence secretary Lloyd Austin said the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier, a missile cruiser and four missile destroyers were heading to the region. US fighter jets would also be sent.

 

Further military aid to Israel would be sent in the coming days, the White House said, adding that the US was working to to ensure that Israel's enemies would not try to seek advantage from the situation.

Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi has expressed support for the Hamas attack, saying Israel needed to be held to account for endangering the region.

Hamas has said assistance from Iran helped it carry out its attack, which involved rockets, drones and militants on paragliders and saw hundreds of fighters break through Israeli border fortifications around the Gaza Strip.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the US had not seen evidence of direct Iranian involvement, but that Iran had been helping the Gaza-based group for years.

"Hamas wouldn't be Hamas without the support that it's gotten over many years from Iran. We haven't yet seen direct evidence that Iran was behind this particular attack or involved. But the support over many years is clear," he told US TV.

Boots on the ground?  Doubtful.  I think they just want to prevent a repeat of the USS Liberty incident.  I'm pretty sure there's US intelligence assets that will be seeing stuff the Israelis don't want them seeing.  Again.

Best explanation I heard was on Al Jazeera, and it's in case they have to evacuate American citizens in a hurry. An aircraft carrier would provide a platform for helicopters.

 

If they actually start bombing Gaza ( I don't think they are that stupid though ) it's going to open a very large can of very angry worms.

Not sure, but I think he was saying that he expects Hamas people to enter the US to take revenge for supporting Israel. It's not like the UK has sent an aircraft carrier to support them ( does the UK even have an aircraft carrier with planes anymore? ).

I hope for the US' sake you're right.  But don't be surprised if they commit reprisals in the UK as well.  

 

This attack was long in the planning.  And shows a certain lack of concern about the consequences.  That the intelligence communities didn't see it coming is rather disturbing.  Not hard to imagine they've pre-placed soldiers all over the world.

Any clue on how to evacuate all those officials in Washington DC and along the East coast ..... not from the conflict zone but out of this universe.

Ever since 1945 the official America has been warmongering and on a destructive blazing path through literally almost all continents, except Australia that is. Nobody ever queried the US "defense" budget of $880+  B I L L I O N per year. According to the official US understanding, Hamas are to be fought ever since 1950 in Persia, 1953 in Korea, 1964 in Indochina etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. 

Get the yanks to mind their own business, clean up their tremendous domestic mess, stop with all this political correctness nonsense, use their taxpayers money for better use like education - but we all know, why nothing will ever happen unless they go belly up financially.

Let me connect the dots for you.  Sending a warship in defense of Hamas' enemy is likely to trigger reprisals.  They're not going to attack a carrier fleet. They're going to attack a softer target.  It's not hard to believe that may have pre-positioned some soldiers in the US to do that.  The wide open US border would be the perfect way to get them into the country.
