BANGKOK (NNT) - Minister of Defense Sutin Klungsang visited the Royal Thai Army Headquarters, where he discussed policies and operational guidelines with General Charoenchai Hinthao, the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army. They were welcomed by the Royal Thai Army’s high command team and the Honor Guard.

Sutin stated that the Army is keen to execute various missions in accordance with government policies. He expressed confidence that other policies that align with the Army’s missions will be carried out smoothly as well.

The current focus of the army is its transformation into a modern, capable force, suitable for security missions and equipped to effectively address emerging threats, including natural disasters, drug-related issues, and poverty among the population. In addition, the army acknowledges its challenges and is committed to addressing them to become a reliable, modern force that the people can depend on.

Furthermore, Sutin has introduced a policy to enhance the selection process for conscripted soldiers by increasing their incentives and welfare. The selection criteria will also encompass various situations for consideration. He also emphasized that the military should be a trusted institution for the people in all instances, and all operations must adhere to transparency and verification.

How about just paying the poor more and not wasting military time on helping the poor. I mean they should be training for invasions and future wars with nearby nations, I mean an invasion by Laos is very near

Using the military to address poverty? Will they use the blimp and the F-35s to drop money into slums?

So he made a public, written promise that the military will stay out of politics and immediately cashier anyone found to be plotting a coup? I thought not.

How much might this 'modernization' cost?

I seem to recall (could be wrong) almost any new government in the last 20 years or so being faced with some huge, often vague carte blanche hint of budget request/demand by the military (directly or indirectly).

More than you know: "Constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand, Section 3 - Sovereign powers belong to the Thai people." (my bold emphasis)

The end goal - a thoroughly modern military that continues to buy very expensive arms that are of low quality and needed only for the commissions and continues to conscript thousands of young Thai men it doesn't need and allow NCOs to beat some of them to death for fun with total impunity.  I am sure Sutin will be able to achieve this and announce yet another PT win to the gullible peasantry on the 6 o'clock news and keep them happy for another day.
