A two year old toddler was locked in a car for hours after her mother left her alone to go shopping. The incident, which took place at a convenience store on Niphat Uthit Road behind the Florida Hotel in downtown Hat Yai, Songkhla province, occurred at 10am today. The girl had accidentally hit the lock button, trapping herself inside the vehicle.

The vehicle, a minivan, was left running with the air conditioning on while the mother ran errands.

Upon returning, however, she discovered that her daughter had inadvertently locked the doors and was unable to get out.

Despite her best efforts, the doors remained locked for several hours. Eventually, the emergency rescue unit of the Mit Samakee Foundation (Tung Sia Siang Tueng) in Hat Yai was alerted to the situation by store employees, who reported that a child had been trapped in a car for hours and that the doors couldn’t be opened, reported KhaoSod.

The rescue team successfully unlocked the car door within five minutes using a metal rod inserted through the driver’s side window. The young girl was understandably upset and cried as her mother comforted her.

It was actually made illegal to leave a parked car with its engine running many years ago

As usual, completely  ignored and unenforced

Why was the mother not able to unlock the car? Did she not only leave the engine running and car unlocked so the toddler could leave the car, but leave her keys inside the car as well? Darwin Award candidate.

How do you leave a car running without the key inside the car?

True. So she only left the car with the engine running with keys left in the car for anyone to steal. Hmm.

Fantastic parenting. She doesn't deserve a child! If the child hadn't locked the door, anyone could have just driven off with her daughter.

Or the child could just push it into gear.

Any competent locksmith could have you in there within 10 to 15 minutes.

Lockpickinglawyer from YouTube could have it open with a plastic pen cap and gummy bear in under 2 minutes.

A rock would have popped a window in seconds.

And how would a 2yr old toddler do that ?

Climbing about, accidental kick, just child pushing on the stick.....nothing to say the child was restrained.

Assuming the vehicle has an automatic transmission.

A button on the shifter needs to be depressed in order to move the shifter..... chances of a two year old having that kind of knowledge and dexterity will be extremely slim.

… as well as simultaneously pressing the brake pedal.

Even a stick shift can be pushed into gear without pressing the clutch.

Your eyes painted on or did you purposely not read the part where I said "assuming the vehicle has an automatic transmission" ?

Simple solution would be to carry 2 sets of keys at all times, but most smart people

do not think of that. It may not be comfortable but I am able to lock up my car and get back in

after getting my mail, etc.  Breaking a window is expensive, but maybe a lesson would be learned from

the car owner. IMO

Pick-up + van combo.  Those drivers are some of the lowest lifeforms on earth.  They can even make a stationary car dangerous.
