Four officers were injured in a fierce confrontation between police and criminals, who instigated several disturbances and bombings in Narathiwat, Thailand. A gold shop was severely damaged, and approximately 10 electricity poles were knocked down.

Early in the morning of today, around 1.30am, troublemakers clashed with officers and secretly planted bombs near the Tabah checkpoint in Jeh Heh, Tak Bai district, Narathiwat province. Preliminary reports suggest a group associated with disruptive operations caused the incident at the Seng Charoen gold shop and set off the bomb at the Tabah checkpoint. Several criminals used grenades and firearms to attack the checkpoint, reported KhaoSod.

Simultaneously, a bomb disguised in a fire extinguisher was placed, causing substantial damage to the front of the Seng Charoen gold shop. During the incident, police officers stationed at the Tabah checkpoint fought back against the criminals, causing them to retreat and flee. Four officers sustained minor injuries.

Wasn't the state of emergency just lifted down there?

Not at all. The state of emergency was re-enacted for the 75th three month period last week or this week.

  •  Thailand this week lifted emergency rule in parts of the country’s restive south, where a Muslim insurgency has claimed thousands of lives over the past two decades.

Previously, Thailand had lifted the decree in 10 districts over the years.

There are 29 districts (by my count including Songhla) in the Deep South. I find no mention of the name and number of additional districts and respective province currently being lifted from the emergency rule.

But what has really changed with any of the lifting of the emergency decree? "...the latest easing of decree is not likely not to make such an impression on BRN" (largest insurgency group). Matthew Wheeler, International Crusi Group.

Note that while law on the Prevention and Suppression of Torture and Enforced Disappearance passed in August 2022 (championed in part by Future Forward Party) was to be effective on Feb. 22, 2023 PM - Prayuth delayed its implementation through his term as PM. I haven't seen any announcement from the new government to implement enforcement of the new law whose delay by PM Prayut had been held unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court.

If the new government is going to operate outside of the law, any suspension of the emergency decree would seem irrelevant, especially to the insurgents.

Sad to see my home province being in such a state. I'm overseas now, but will return to Narathiwat next week. Hopefully, there won't be any follow-up incidents in the short term.
