There have been several reports recently regarding the Thai police 'rounding up' foreigners who had overstayed their visa plus reports of people being 'busted at the airport' for overstaying.

We never hear anything in the news about people being 'busted' for overstaying in the UK although certain types of businesses in the UK are sometimes targeted by UK Immigration as they are known to employ illegal immigrants and overstayers.

Trying to find out the UK's position, I came across a government report from 2017 that includes some staggering figures of known overstaying but naturally doesn't include those who entered illegally.

3.9 As at 31 March 2017, there were 88,134 visa nationals with ISA “identities” whose visa had
expired for whom there was no record of departure. At the same time, there was no record of
departure for 513,088 identified non-visa nationals.

There will no doubt be some discrepancies and a few deaths etc. but on the face of it, in 2017 there were over 600,000 known overstayers in the UK!

Thailand loves to make a mountain out of a molehill.

We all know that overstaying a visa isn't a huge issue in the grand scheme of things.

But because Thai people are so inept at most things, overstayers are an easy win for them given the current 90 day report system that is in place.

Try getting them to investigate a real crime and they haven't got a prayer.

Thanks for the linked report, it makes grim reading.

Firstly the obvious over selling of the immigration controls followed by a failure to deliver:

And then the complete failure to get the data right.

I can’t copy and paste from the report so therefore point to its paragraphs

3.14, 6.15, 6.16 and 6.17.

The claimed number of overstayers cannot be reliably determined on the basis of the system put in place and then removed.

The usual big promises that turn out to be nonsense.

What is not included in this report is the cost to taxpayers and businesses.

Another failure from a failed Government.

I wonder who it was that the contracts were awarded to?  🤫
