Meanwhile Back on the Farm.

" What is it Lassie? Timmy fell in the well?  Woof Woof.

This line always comes to  mind when ever I  think of the title line

"Meanwhile back at the Farm". only now days no one can possibly fell down a 5" well

So , about a year ago, we purchased a Rai of land about 5 min from our house in Khon Kaen  as investment.

And since it was there . we decided to play in the dirt, and for the misly amount  of 10,000 baht, gorow 1,000 bahts worth of vegetables

First we built a small One room farmhouse to store tools and other things,  with a bathroom , because wife refused to o in the woods, and a covered area on the side to hung out and get out of the sun.

Notice the barely one step up from an Etan truck.

Suzuki Carry. I love it!!

Don't worry scratching it, and the back sides fold down for the bed to form a convenient workbench.

We were toying naming it "Juniors Farm"  but the wife could not get the reference, so we went with this sign "Uncle's farm" at least that's what the wife tells me it says. I suspect she might not be entirely truthful, I obscured part of it in case it says something else that could get me <Deleted>.

I have plenty more pictures that I will save for another instalment of.....

Meanwhile Back on the Farm!!

I forgot to mention our new farm worker

Look at the little guy go!

I think it's always funny when farangs in Thailand become farmers.

I have to admit I buy my vegetable on the fresh market or in the supermarket. That is so convenient.

It says "Suan Uncle Steve", more commonly written in English as "Uncle Steve's Farm"

Well if you are into saving money and convenience, then I guess you are right, but if you have money to blow, , enjoy getting up 6 am, and you have a chiropractor nearby,, then farming is for you!!

And did you notice the thingy with the guy who goes up and down up and down, up and down?  I can look at him for hours, Sooo funny!!

 It is indeed very often pronounced as "Sateve".

And how the heck did you defeat  my cleverly devised cryptological device I constructed to obscure the writing?

Cursed  your Uptonian x-ray visions!!

many Thais cant make the "ST" sound. I don't really know, but I don't think. it exists in the Thai language.. You of course being able to read that would know better.

Correct. As far as I am aware there is no equivalent to the "st" sound in Thai language. So Steve becomes Sa-teve, Stanley becomes Sa-tan-lee, and stupid becomes sa-tupid. The last of which, I have heard a few times hurled in my direction (usually in a playful way).

When my wife calls me Satupid, I reply

You married me and I am satupid? That usually shuts her up

Oh! and I duck, bob,  and weave. The girl has a hell of a throwing arm and incredible aim

We grow a little fruit and veg,the Thai's love it only having to walk 30 metres to get what they need then back to the kitchen.

Otherwise local fresh market operates 2.5km's away nightly with a Tuesday morning market.

For me it's more about the quiet lifestyle, living on 40 acres with no close neighbours suits me fine.

Can hear a pin drop most days and nights.

And the farming side only ties you up for a month a year if you have machinery.

Yea I also love it at the farm , I often take my kindle with my, sit in the shade and chillax .

Wish it was 30 m away so I can walk to it.

next door Neighbors are getting divorced, It's a shame  , because they are such nice people , with two fine young kids, Hate to see them split. The wife and kids moved to her mother's,

They want to cell the property, but they are asking too much for it.

it is less than a rai,(A rai in this area is worth 1m baht) and the house on it is IMO worth 500 k. so I offered them 1.5 m . they want 2.5  , they will never get that. Even at 1,5 it's too much IMO but worth it to me because it is next door, I can split the house and rent it, and keep the rest of the property to play with. It would be nice to get up in the morning, walk next door , and keep busy.

Early in the morning is my favorite time of the day.

Perhaps after they wait a year without takers , they will change their mind.

Where are you that you have 40 acres. Sounds like the US, using acre as a measurement term

We back onto the Phuphaman and PhuKradeung national parks.

As i'm typing sitting outside,i have  360 degree views of rolling hills and small mountains.

Not as good as waking up to the ocean but not bad.

Nice and quiet as only locals mostly going to their farms,3 km's away it gets more busy as a main junction heading to several villages.

40 acres/100rai,even though an Aussie i still for some reason use imperial measurements for area and rainfall

Where i came from we measured rain in points so love the rain here on the tin roof.

Lot of resorts popping up to the south of us,there is a bat cave very popular with the tourists.

Hope you get a deal done.

Walk up this morning and it was significantly cooler than past days.

A pleasure!!

A few weeks ago they were clearing the trees from the electric lines, and they had left a bunch of small branches on the side of the road , So me and the wife went out with our hand cart and collected some;

When the weather gets a bit cooler we love  to start a fire , and cook a breakfast on one of these traditional clay barbeques. The dogs enjoyed the walk almost as much as I did, and they were very helpful. NOT!! LOL

meanwhile back at the farm, the string beans are coming along nicely

stringbeans.jpg.ceec184b78fbefec2c840b154ba4b022.jpg

And the egpland with which I made an eggplant curry easterday was to die for!! No really , I put to much chilli paste in it and when I ate it , I thought I would die. And trust me it was as hot coming out as it was going in

flowerbed.jpg.789af44d6487b3547695ec431bdc8e69.jpg

We cleared a border area on both sides of the gravel driveway and planted sunflower , and cosmos flowers and was happy to see the they all were sprouting. It should be nice when they grow and flower . You can't see it well, , my photographic skills live a lot to be desired, but it is the bare area running down the side.

Looks great and good for the exercise.

Our main crop is sunn hemp.

Mrs just hopped in the pickup to deliver 20kg's of seed to a resort,

Not getting rich off it but keeps her happy being the queen of sunn hemp in the area:smile:

The last photo is OK, though it could have done will a bit less foreground and more sky. At least you got the horizon level, which is a common problem in many scenery photos.

I would be the first to admit that photographic skills leave a lot to be desired. My technique is best described as Point, Click, and hope for the best.

Maintaining a level horizon has always been a challenge for me, especially after a few drinks. very proud that I nailed it this time

Continuing with my corny story. (pun intended though ill-advised)

The patch of corn we planted a couple of weeks ago. Not even sure if it is even corn planting season,

but doing things half-ass never stopped me before, so why start now.

please note the level  horizon.  Not bad haa.?

Hope this corn comes out sure 'cause I'm sure hungry.

I've always taken loads of photos, but digital allowed me to take thousands as cost no more than a SD card and a digital camera. Mine is a happy snappy Sony, but good enough.

I used to take hundreds of photos on every trip in Thailand and every day brought a new photo opportunity, but back in home country I hardly ever take photos- it's just not that interesting.

Taking better photos is just practice, and digital allows the duds to be deleted easily. Even misaligned horizons are easily corrected with a computer. Photoshop not needed if have W10, as that edit is good enough for the basics.

However, photoshop is great for removing unwanted people from photos, though there is probably a computer program to do that more easily now.

One of my very big ( and very put off ) projects is digitizing over a thousand paper photos. I'll probably die before I finish that one.

There have been strange going ons on this forum , perhaps a hick up at the forum, it  seems to be back now

I have been doing a lot of work at the  farm, building a Sala

except for a couple of times that my brother in law came to help, I have been doing the whole thing on my on, so its slow going.

I'll see what pictures I have and post them late

So as i said i have been a busy bee at the farm building a Sala for the ladies to hung out in and leave me alone. But more about  that later, first I am excited to announce that  for the first time ever in Thailand my tomatoes are doing good. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

So to the Sala story

I have been looking a purchasing one of those Salas we all see advertised on FB,for about 40Kbaxt but they all seem to made out of Mai deng wood, which would require a lot of maintenance , and might become termite food.

So I decided I will build my own out of metal ! What could go wrong with that

Well first and more important, I just realised that I am no longer 25, and all this work is kicking my ass.

The below was my inspiration.

Dug four , one meter deep foundation holes

3 meters apart, and squared them by taking diagonal measurement.

In the holes I dropped four concrete coverts pipes ,

colvertpipe.jpg.c9717e87f62b6b1dfabf194491113bcd.jpg

And filled them up with concrete.

In the wet concrete , for each pipe ,I inserted four steel threaded rods about 16" long , with a 2"  90 degrees bend at the bottom.  Leveled them with a line level, and welded 3 plates in the rods, making sure they were level and square.

salafoundation.jpg.9197fa1fd94a0a90214d6c196d99766f.jpg

Then welded a 3"x4" frame on the plates.

Sorry I don't have individual pictures for those steps.

To be continues:

It is strange indeed,

Perhaps an issue they are working on.

Do you see any of the pictures I posted after that one?

I will post one that I did some work today below, let me know if you see those pictures

Ok so I did this a few days ago and posted the picture on another thread. I think it was called "what did you do the week the forum was down)

sala123.jpg.9105a6e95cbe837d7358a392592dfd89.jpg

I stained and created a faux wood grain. om the 4x4 posts and base

salawoodgrain1.jpg.3364594baf64643dd0e6b409f8d8ee31.jpg

and started working on the roof, and benches

I'll tell you. I will be happy when this roof is done. I am working all by myself with C clamps holding one end while I go to the other end and adjust.

I have made this little jig to keep the spacing even ,When the short piece hits the plank already installed, the top long piece is where the plank I am working will rests. But all the running up and down the ladder is wearing me out.

On the positive side , I sleep well  LOL

jig.jpg.6b1d89d244ce9df83b90b88c34680e10.jpg

I have two sides done , so I am looking at another two days of work.

Do you like my screw and tool holder (AKA my wifes planter) screwed to the side of the ladder? Hey don't laugh , it works,
