I came across this great opinion piece written by James Gorrie on "Wokeness" and how to get rid of it.

In the article he makes some hard-hitting points, e.g. about the distortion of language, where Wokish words now almost mean the opposite of what they used to. 

"A big part of the woke movement’s success lies in its Orwellian distortion of language so that commonly understood meanings of words are inverted to mean the opposite. For example, words such as “tolerance” really mean intolerance of competing ideas and values, and “inclusion” found in the common woke phrase “diversity, equity, and inclusion,” or DEI, really means excluding traditional ideas, values, and beliefs." 

This post is a good opening shot to trigger the discussion about the Woke phenomenon, that you currently see all around you.  And fortunately more and more people are waking up to that dystopian world-view and don't want to have anything to do with it.  The Bud Light story and the latest Disney movie-bummers being some examples of 'Enough is Enough'...

Commentary

When it comes to spending their money and supporting their values, many Americans are now wide awake, and most don’t like what they see. “Peak Wokeness,” a term that may or may not be new (it is to me), is now pervasive in our lives and dominates our culture.

Undoubtedly, it would like to do the same with our private thoughts and our closely held traditional values and beliefs.

It just about does.

Wokeness Is Orwellian – and Everywhere

The woke crowd in America is loud, proud, and ... Stalinesque. It’s literally forcing communism down our collective throats.

Worse, these greatly misguided and extremely intolerant people are seemingly everywhere—from your coffee shop and your bank and your 401k investments to the shows you pay to watch on your smart television. They’re in the boardrooms of corporate America; they run our schools, colleges, and universities that celebrate transgenderism and make indentured servants of their graduates­, and are in Human Resources departments to ensure that no independent thought or idea is expressed in the workplace.

You won't get anyone here claiming they have been misgendered, or demanding to be addressed by their bloody pronouns, or insisting everyone support whatever the current-thing™ is, they would just rightfully be laughed out the door.  2023 globally though has been a good year for the crackdown on DEI stupidity Harvard's Claudine Gay being the latest woke idiot out the door, whoever thought hiring based on skin color instead of meritocracy would ever be sustainable,  these plonkers got a way with too much for too long.

Woke is an adjective derived from African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) meaning "alert to racial prejudice and discrimination".

I must admit, I despise wokeness and the 'critical' race theory that underpins it, which is not a critical theory, but a naked attempt to get special privileges, top jobs and $$$$$ for quota groups.

I worked in the US for 20 years and left because it was truly awful to works with totally incompetent 'quota' staff. that you couldn't ever fire (unless they killed someone). My company paid out hundreds of millions in damages settled out of court to quota people that left the company voluntarily and decided post facto that there was racism at the company. It was beyond ridiculous. Now it has moved into even more nuttiness with wokeness. Not only that when you went to a store and went to the check out, they were staffed almost exclusively by quota staff, who were not only incompetent but bone idle. 

Now I have nothing against blacks or gays, but I happen to believe that they don't merit it. I also happen to believe that there are only two sexes and two genders male and female, and changing the definition of gender to permit people who 'identify' as a another sex is nonsense that I reject.

Fortunately in Thailand there are none of these irritation that impact my life (I don't know about other people). I don't patronise gay or transgender bars, and in fat the only transgender person I come across is an assistant at the bakery store....and he/she is perfectly pleasant and normal.

How is it right wing? Woke came from left wing academia not from the right wing. Blacks started using the term a few years ago. I do agree that the left wing leaders moved away from supporting workers rights and better pay, forgot their voters and immersed themselves in identity politics. The Labour Party in Britain has totally moved away from workers to supporting illegal immigrants, which, having been brought up in working class Britain in council housing, is a huge electoral mistake as most working class people are socially very conservative. Go in any city pub and you will see what I mean.

On topic ... no savvy business is going to go too woke, as majority of customers, especially older non overly woke folks, still make up their customer base.  That majority is also dwindling fast .... on paper anyway, as it's in style to identify as anything but white cis ? 

 

My issue would be avoiding companies that put diversity in front of experienced workers, such as the one airline announcing...   Diversity being a priority in hiring pilots ... hmm, not sure I'd fly them.  Best vs ethnic or gender quotas ... UP2U

Yes, I think a certain modest degree of prejudice is part and parcel of being human. Most racism and prejudice is not personal at all....it is an abstract concept that you hate Jews or Blacks or Gays in toto, not in person. I'm sure if that contact is positive over your lifetime, then I'm sure you will be less discriminatory....if it is routinely negative, then I'm sure it will be negatively impacted. I think blacks in the US deserve a fairer deal....not reparations or quotas but real help to take the brightest and best and invest in them....pretty much the only way for a black person to make high income in the US is to be a rap star or an athlete. I hate all organised religions believing them to be a hotbed for bigotryry and an excuse to murder other people from a different religion.....and the Christian religions are steeped in bigotry and murder.

I come across things here and there - in tv advertising, tv shows and films, at work, where there is a clear attempt to seem hip to the jive of what young people are thinking, and on occasion they go too far or muck it up. Mainly harmless - and hardly new for the powers that be to try and win favour for dubious motives.

It's impact, in my opinion, is somewhat overblown, mainly by the right wing politicians and media, who will scour the world for more extreme examples and say - fear this - this is what democrats or other lefties want to do to you and your children. 

For sure, point out where things are over the top, but be honest about it's implications on our lives, and being a bit kinder and aware of the feelings and point of view of others, is not so bad.
