Crime Finnish Fugitive Wanted for Murder & Drug Trafficking Captured in Hua Hin
Picture courtesy of Matichon. A Finnish national wanted by INTERPOL for serious crimes including murder and large-scale drug trafficking has been apprehended, following a covert operation by immigration police. On the afternoon of 24 June, at approximately 13:30, Police Major General Chairit Anurith, Commander of Immigration Division 3, led a special operation to arrest Mr. Daniel Reijo Karvonen, a 42-year-old fugitive subject to a Red Notice issued by INTERPOL. Karvonen is wanted by Norwegian authorities in connection with three major criminal cases, including a brutal murder and international narcotics trafficking. Acting on intelligence gathered over a sustained surveillance campaign, police identified Karvonen’s residence in a condominium complex in Hua Hin. Officers disguised themselves as fitness trainers and mingled with other gym users to confirm his identity. Once his presence was verified, they moved in and detained him without incident. Investigations revealed that Karvonen had fled to Thailand after being implicated in the November 2024 murder of a man in Kongsvinger, Norway. Further charges allege that Karvonen was manufacturing and distributing illegal narcotics in the same region and was a key figure in a transnational smuggling operation that transported drugs in vehicles across the Swedish-Norwegian border. Police Major General Chairit described Karvonen as a “dangerous criminal” and noted that the Norwegian authorities have been seeking his extradition for some time. He added that the operation followed directives from Thailand’s national police chief and is part of a wider government initiative to eliminate transnational crime and prevent foreign fugitives from using Thailand as a safe haven. “This arrest is a clear signal that Thailand will not tolerate foreign criminals who threaten the peace and security of our society,” said Chairit. “We are committed to upholding the law and safeguarding the country’s image and stability.” Mr. Karvonen is currently in police custody pending extradition proceedings. Crime UN Demands Thailand Act on Trafficking Scams Linked to Abuse
Scam centre victims, deceived or trafficked into working in Myanmar, remain trapped in limbo inside a compound at KK Park. Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post The United Nations has delivered a stern warning to Thailand, urging immediate action against cross-border human trafficking tied to online scams in Southeast Asia. In a letter dated March 10, the UN highlights serious concerns over forced labour in scam centres in Thailand and its neighbouring countries. The UN, focusing on the exploitation of women and children, reports that victims from various regions, including East Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas, are duped by fake job offers. Once trapped, these individuals are coerced into scams involving financial fraud, romance cons, fake investments, and illegal gambling. Victims find themselves confined, their passports seized, and subjected to severe abuse and forced labour with little or no compensation. Failure to comply often leads to harsh punishments, and some victims are even sold to other illicit operations. Thailand is implicated as a crucial transit hub, particularly near Myanmar’s Karen State. The UN claims these scam centres exploit Thai resources such as power and communication infrastructure to facilitate their operations. There are concerns that many victims are unjustly prosecuted rather than recognised as trafficking survivors. The UN calls for answers on 10 critical points, including Thailand's response to the allegations and measures to prevent the misuse of its resources. The letter also emphasises the need for consular staff training to identify and aid victims effectively. Thailand, along with other regional governments like Myanmar, China, and Cambodia, has been urged to align its actions with international human rights laws, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the ASEAN Convention Against Trafficking in Persons. This global appeal underscores the widespread nature of the problem and the urgent need for comprehensive regional cooperation to combat these heinous crimes.
