DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan 17 (Reuters) - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Wednesday that parties to the conflict in Gaza were "trampling" on international law and urged them to implement an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Guterres said the warring parties were "ignoring international law, trampling on the Geneva Conventions, and even violating the United Nations Charter".

"The world is standing by as civilians, mostly women and children, are killed, maimed, bombarded, forced from their homes and denied access to humanitarian aid," he said.

"I repeat my call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, and a process that leads to sustained peace for Israelis and Palestinians, based on a two-state solution."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected calls for a ceasefire, saying Israel will continue its offensive in Gaza until it defeats Hamas and recovers the hostages taken there during a deadly rampage by Hamas gunmen on Oct. 7.

Well we all know there will never be a two state solution when Hamas is in place. But a further ceasefire for hostage/prisoner exchange would be a welcome opportunity for more humanitarian aid to be distributed within Gaza. Then unless Hamas surrenders the job needs to be finished and they need to be completely dismantled.

The U. N. is in violation of almost everything that it was intended to do... they are a gaggle of overrated blowhards who have never accomplished true UNITED concepts or guidance for NATIONS... and they expect Israel to believe that they have the solution to the problem...

Does anyone believe that the hostages will be saved by continuing? IMO it's far more likely they will die, killed in the bombing, by disease ( as disease is apparently spreading among the Gazan population ), their own existing diseases ( medicine has only just been allowed to reach them ), or by being killed if their rescue looks likely.

IMO the only way they will survive is through negotiation, and Hamas looks unlikely to agree to negotiations without a ceasefire. They have not so far and look prepared to see thousands more Gazans die without giving up. Perhaps they believe that it's better to die than live under israeli oppression.

While he says that BOTH parties are trampling on international law, only one is refusing to ceasefire.

That would be referring to the party that has the planes and the bombs and is denying aid.

Does he actually believe that the israelis will withdraw from the occupied West Bank to allow such a possibility? I don't know why he is repeating something IMO nobody with any sense thinks is possible any more.

This is more like it, from the European Union proposal and just passed in a resolution. A permanent ceasefire only after all hostages are “immediately and unconditionally released” and “the terrorist organization Hamas is dismantled.”

European parliament backs ceasefire resolution contingent on hostages’ release, Hamas’s ouster

In a resolution that showed significant support for Israel, the European Parliament calls for a permanent ceasefire after all hostages are “immediately and unconditionally released” and “the terrorist organization Hamas is dismantled.”

The resolution was adopted by 312 votes in favor, 131 against and 72 abstentions.

At the same time, the MEPs denounce “the disproportionate Israeli military response, which has caused a civilian death toll on an unprecedented scale.”

Will there be a two-state solution with the current Israeli right-wing government in place?

@thaibeachlovers

That might very well be true. 100+ days of fighting, only one hostage rescued in a special ops action. Former IDF chief and current War Cabinet member says there will be no Entebbe style victory either.

But what Hamas wants, and what you seem to support (because, as said numerous times, I don't believe you give a hoot about the hostages) is a non-starter. There are no guarantees Hamas will comply, no information on hostages, no assurances a similar attack will not occur. What Hamas wants is a victory ignoring what it did, and what blows Gaza suffered.

There could be some middle way, maybe. But at this point, neither side seems to be willing to budge - and from their respective positions, rightly so.

Appeasement will not work with these guys. I get it you're into that.

I read somewhere that Israel is now isolated with no world wide support (apart from the USA) and the World has turned against them and all the World opposes them .

I read that on these forums here

That would be your interpretation, and given your bias and limited sources of information - not to be taken seriously.

Israel did not refuse a ceasefire - it refused Hamas's terms for such. That difference.

Maybe things are different on Planet AJ, but in reality, Hamas broke the previous understandings reached.

Somehow, in your world, Hamas is not responsible for this war. All the death and destruction? For you it's nothing to do with them. Nothing they did provoked it, nothing that they can do will stop it. None so blind etc.

A two-state solution does not imply Israel withdraws from the West Bank overnight. It's going to be a lengthy process - if and when. Your contrived fantasies have little to do with facts.

What were Hamas's terms for the ceasefire ?

For Israel to stop the war, go back to Israel and forget all about Oct 7 th and pretend it never happened in return for the hostages ?
