Change is definitely upon Thailand...

Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin affirmed yesterday that the government is open to reevaluating a recently announced policy which reduces penalties for individuals found with five or fewer methamphetamine pills. This statement follows the public disapproval that has arisen in response to the law, signed by Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew on February 9, which determines that anyone found with five or fewer methamphetamine tablets will be considered a user rather than a dealer.

Is this reevaluation in policy condone drug use?

Do you think this is for the better or for the worse for Thai society?

What was the previous law? How much did they raise or lower the bar?

Why the italics? Dunno....

If you had any amount of methamphetamines you could be sent to jail + a fine/penalty.

don't you think that  before we kneejerk condemn the proposal it might be good to google what the penalty is now?

If anything, it will just free up space in prisons, (a good thing) as 5 or less tabs of anything, charged as  distributing is a bit silly, when you don't have the space to house them.

Need to bring back the death penalty or at least, a real 'life sentence' for distribution, not the revolving door they have now.

The war on drugs doesn't work. Interdiction raises prices and crime but doesn't stop people using drugs. It is high time to abandon the war on drugs and let nature take its course. If people die of overdoses then so be it. Sell drugs, all drugs including yaba and opiates in government shops and sell them cheaply so that they don't need to commit crimes to raise money to steal. Why put money in the hands of drug dealers and from corruption to the police, when the government could keep the profits.

Users should have to register with a pharmacy to buy the drugs and then those users could be targeted for a drug prevention scheme.
