Maya Bay on Phi Phi Island in Krabi named the third “best beach in the world” by Lonely Planet.

The beaches of Thailand are in the spotlight again. The world-famous travel publication Lonely Planet has named 20 of the world’s best beaches, with Thailand’s Maya Bay coming in third. Maya Bay is a beach hidden behind a limestone cliff, part of Phi Phi Island, in Krabi, a southern province of Thailand. The stunning bay is surrounded by limestone cliffs and boasts turquoise water and silky soft sand.

The location became instantly famous throughout the world after the movie The Beach starring Leonardo DiCaprio, hit the cinemas in 2000. Maya Bay is a must-go beach surrounded by breathtaking nature.

I've never seen that movie - so had to look it up.

Here's the screen from "The Beach". The uploader says it was polluted when he visited there in 2014.

The Beach - Maya Beach scene

Apparently, as a result of the movie, over 3000 tourists per day were visiting and they nearly destroyed the coral reef.

Whats the big deal, just a lot of sand and rocks 🫢

It's gorgeous for sure, just went there a few months ago. It's a National Park, entrance fee foreigner is 400 thb. You can't go swimming. From where the boat drops you off you're nut to butt walking on a wood walkway to the beach. Once on the beach, no swimming, you can walk in the water for pics.

400 baht to do nothing except walk on the beach and say you've been there?

Save your money and watch it on YouTube.

When you book the multi island tour you're not really aware of exact itinerary. The 400 baht was part of tour and you don't know about the no swimming till you get there.
