Maybe Thailand should follow Korea and be more selective of expats/tourists

In the wake of our recent discussion on the stringent immigration checks faced by Thai nationals abroad, a torrent of responses has unveiled a disconcerting undertone. It prompts us to ask maybe Thailand should go the path of Korea and be more selective of the visa-running, draft dodging, racist, mysoginistic sexpats we let in. 

 

The previous sentence was only a slight hyperbole. 

 

But here is a nice cross section of people that replied to our story. Thailand’s hospitality should not be mistaken for leniency towards those who disrespect the nation and its people.

 

The derogatory commentary from these expatriates stands in stark contrast to the values of mutual respect and understanding that are integral to Thai society. It reflects not just a personal failing but a systemic issue where certain expatriates exploit Thailand’s welcoming nature while harboring and expressing contempt for its people.

I think the rules should rely on the definition of tourism. Authorities should systematically questions tays longer than the duration of normal annual leave in the country of origin of the so called tourist.

It might pass the thinking of some, but the way you treat foreigners is the way you might be treated in other countries you may move to. Everything that is done here shows in the treatment of Asians in America for one. The prejudice isn't just here . There are 300,000 farangs here if that estimate is right, and they have relatives and friends back home they talk to. Treating people from other countries well only passes this on. Misogyny is huge in locals here, so that shouldn't even  be mentioned. Racism is everywhere. Sexpats are usually the tourists, but prostitution here is why many come, so who's to blame? People who overstay are only hurting themselves, and that's anywhere. You respect people everywhere, especially where you are living, or it leads to trouble. Just sayin'.

May be a developed, non corrupt, democratic nation can create those policies not a nation whose premier visits Airport 3 times a week to count no of tourists AKA billion bahts flying in country or sucking up to CCP and Russia with policies aimed at sucking up to them more. "Disrespectful behavior" seems like an overly broad restriction, and could be used like many "laws" here are, to randomly apply punishments.

Our friend Wanchai means that any criticism from foreigners is unwelcome and should lead to deportation. He stops short of recommending public flogging.

Japan is worst. They've actually suffered stagnation to their economy for decades, an ageing population, but they refuse to let any immigrants in.

If you go to Penang, Malaysia, and compare the tourists there versus tourists in Thailand, based on their behaviour, I definitely believe Thailand should be more selective on who they let in, and focus on quality rather than quantity. Quality tourists might actually be discouraged from visiting, when the entire <deleted> of the Universe is let in.

What are the differences? I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm just interested to know how you think the average tourist to Malaysia acts differently than the average tourist to Thailand. I know some laws, such as those regarding homosexuality, make a difference. But what else do you see?

those numbers seem more realistic... but i think i remember it being a bit more. lets not haggle over this...the numbers were revealed during covid if memory serves me right...but my memory is getting sh1!t...

thats how it should be. Being selective over who is allowed in and who isn't lends itself to discrimination allegations and of course the corruption of those officials who are determining who can and cannot come in. Visas are already issued on the understanding that the local Laws will be followed by the visa holder - that just needs to be enforced. ANY "criminal" activity should result in depeortation and a ban for X years. Other anti-social behaviour should incur warnings, fines and then incarceration. 

The laws are already there, it is the enforcement of them that needs a shake-up (or should that be a shake-down?)

Quantity over quality only works if you're selling one dollar items at a swap meet. It doesn't work for tourism, the state of the tourism industry is diminishing by the day, due to an extraordinary lack of intelligence on the part of the officials.

 

As far as the sexpat talk goes, yes there are some who come here for that, but from what I'm told by people to run foundations that cater to women in the industry the vast majority of customers are Thai or Asian, not westerners.

At what point is your tourist status negated - is it with your first or second holiday home?
