I personally think its a backward step into the world of high temperatures and way too many moving parts.

 

This is just FUD, complete nonsense.  It's almost the same as a CNG engine.  I wonder if that article should have been released on 1st April.

 

I am surprised it made it into a publication (assuming it's a real publication) and I don't believe Akio Toyoda can be attributed to the comment, I think it's completely fake.

 

I have long thought that companies like (and especially) Toyota are behind a lot of the anti-EV and pro alternative solutions we read.

 

Toyota have one electric car on sale here the bZ4x, it costs about double the new BYD Atto 3 which I think is a superior car.  It also has BYD's batteries.  Mercedes Benz have concluded a deal for BYD's blade batteries too.

 

BYD's blade batteries are the best technology out there for LiFePO4 at the moment.

So too many moving parts is maybe not the main issue. 

 

I think most of the 20+ year old ICE cars will ultimately be converted to BEV.  I used to have a few classic cars and I would do that to them now if I was still in the UK.  ICE don't play well if they are left for any length of time.

 

We can all guess about how many EV's will be usable in 20 years, but that's all it is, a guess.

Converting ICE cars to EVs sounds expensive to impossible. It's not like that you exchange the combustion engine with an electrical motor. Almost everything has to be changed.

 

And about old EVs: How many of the current batteries do you think will survive for 10 or more years? Few! And what is the rest value of an EV with a bad battery at that time? Mostly likely it doesn't make sense to buy an expensive new battery for an old car.

There is a reason why the resale price for EVs is bad.

EV batteries are predicted to still have 80-90% capacity at 18-20 years.  Most EV's are now LiFePO4 technology which has double the cycles/life of earlier technologies and it is those earlier technologies expected to achieve the numbers I quoted.

 

There are already a few companies in the UK specialising in EV conversions, one of them even sells DIY kits for minis and Porsches.  They have been careful to keep the weight distribution the same by putting batteries at the front for example.

I find it almost funny when some EV enthusiasts just believe that EVs are great. Always and ever, they are the perfect solution. There are no problems. Just perfect.

 

I think the idea about vehicles with electric motors is fine. But in real life there are currently many many problems. I am sure some of those problems will be solved in the next years. And other problems will be problems for a long time.

For some people and applications, like every day just short trips with overnight charging at home, EVs work already. For many other people they just don't make sense.

 

What is so difficult about admitting that EVs are an option for some people, but unsuitable for many others?

Question for forum EV owners.

 

Can you apply the brakes with the left foot while the right foot is still pressing on the accelerator?

Nobody said V's suit everyone, perhaps you would like to list the many many problems with EV's?

could you please name just one forum member who owns an EV and hasn't repeatedly stated "electric cars aren't suitable for everyone"?

 

I am certain you're aware of this, but you seem to be disregarding it ...

I have no idea, why would you want to?

a) if you would pay attention then you would have to ask me to list the well-known problems. Just look at the news and read some articles.

 

b) Racing drivers do that to control cars under difficult conditions. I am pretty sure ordinary drivers don't need that.
