The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and its public and private sector networks managed to save 24.65 megawatts of electricity, by reducing unnecessary lighting and power consumption between 8.30pm and 9.30pm Saturday night, in observation of the “60+ Earth Hour 2024”.

 

However, the electricity saved this year in Bangkok was less than last year, when 36 megawatts were saved, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 5.2 tonnes.

 

This reduction was equivalent to the carbon dioxide emissions from 43 flights between Bangkok and Chiang Mai, a diesel car traveling a distance of 31,200 kilometers, or the switching off of lights in 23,400 households for an hour.”

How did one "save" electricity?   Did they send it to an enormous battery for usage tomorrow?

"reducing unnecessary lighting and power consumption between 8.30pm and 9.30pm Saturday night"

What's unnecessary? Were all entertainment, restaurant, movie theater and shopping mall venues shutdown for the hour? Or just largely government facilities? 

Some public guidance might have been provided prior to Earth Hour to take the exercise seriously.

Off-topic, perhaps, but I once got into a lot of trouble by following Sally Struther's admonition in a US infomercial to "Save the Children.".  Had quite a collection until the authorities stepped in.   I've a sneaky suspicion that I'm not really meant to save electricity either.

Ridiculous!!

This event was not done to save energy or reduce CO2 , it was done to increase awareness. The fact that less electricity was saved this year as compared to last year, could be attributed to less people participating for a variety of reasons, or to the climatic reasons. 

   The fact that we are talking about it indicates some success in the awareness column.

People are tired of the climate bs

... uh ... yes ... or alternatively - as a major paper starting with Bangkok and ending with Post - currently puts it:

Turning off A/C for an hour saves a lot more energy than switching off the lights even for many hours.
