The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has introduced new compensation regulations for victims of wild animal attacks, responding to increasing incidents involving monkeys in Lop Buri province.

 

Under the guidance of Natural Resources and Environment Minister Pol Gen Patcharawat Wongsuwon, the regulations, effective from Saturday (Mar 23), outline compensations up to 100,000 baht for severe injuries or death, 50,000 baht for the loss of a limb or an eye, and a cap of 30,000 baht for other injuries. Additionally, victims can receive daily payments of 300 baht during their recovery for up to 180 days.

 

The move aims to offer financial relief to those affected by encounters with wild animals such as monkeys, elephants, gaurs, and bears. The initiative arrives amidst growing concerns over aggressive macaques in Lop Buri, which have been reported to attack locals and tourists alike, primarily to snatch food.

 

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation plans to relocate aggressive monkeys from Lop Buri’s urban areas to designated enclosures within the province and nearby Nakhon Nayok, noting that food scarcity during the hot season often triggers their aggressive behavior.

Advice for tourists?  Don't go to Lopburi.  As far as gaurs and bears?  Where.  In most of Thailand they have been shot and eaten.  They exist in a handful of National parks, and even there they are being poached into extinction.  The average plod is more likely to get mauled by a soi dog or there neighbors pit-bull.  Compensation for getting mauled by a soi dog?  "Sucks to be you plod."
