Selective minimum wage increases in 10 provinces

Thailand’s Wage Committee decided today to increase minimum wages to 400 baht for employees working in 4-star hotels which have at least 50 employees, located in specific areas in 10 provinces, effective from April 13th.

 

The specific areas are:

 

• Bangkok: Only for hotels located in Pathumwan and Wattana districts.
• Krabi province: Only in areas under the jurisdiction of Ao Nang Tambon Administrative Organisation.
• Chon Buri province: Only in Pattaya City.
• Chiang Mai: Only in Chiang Mai municipal area.
• Prachuap Khiri Khan: only in Hua Hin municipal area.
• Phang-nga: On in Kirk Kak municipal area.
• Phuket province.
• Rayong: Only in Ban Phe sub-district.
• Songkhla: Only in Hat Yai municipal area.
• Surat Thani: Only on Koh Samui.

Shameful... The prices surely can afford a daily salary of 600 THB.. at least.. Touristic areas and famous  hotels and who have to work for it to keep the stars?/ the cleaners, gardeners, etc.. their work makes it that the hotels can be overpriced. So now time to give a bit back to these people.. Tourists are flocking in as we have to believe

It is not that simple with hotel salaries.

Staff receive extras.

Some hotels here on Samui are offering cleaners up to 24,000 baht per month BUT......

That is salary plus tips (the ++ share - often 20%).

Then there is usually a uniform, free meals, sometimes free transport or accommodation and so on.

Then, what do you pay when bookings are down? It is not going to be 24k.

Why not? Most sensible people put some money aside when times are good to be able to tide over the hard times.

24k for cleaners? That's unheard of. 9,000 normal wage. 12,000 with the 400 minimum. And how many employees qualify for the 400 THB? Hotels with 50 employees? In very specific areas? Not the 400 minimum that Pork Pie Party promised in their election campaign across the board minimum. And if what has been written here, it's meaningless as many already earn far in excess of that.

Endless complexity. Thailand's answer to everything, resulting in endless confusion, injustice, inequality and backtracking.

 

No concept that you could have a decent minimum wage across the whole country and all areas of employment, and what employers pay ABOVE that is up to them and whatever the market can tolerate. And no concept of collective bargaining ...

 

One day Thailand will enter the late C20th, but I don't expect to see it.

That anyone other than a Thai ever invests in Thailand is beyond me 🙄

 

To add insult to injury those 4 Star hotels are employing at least 50 Thai citizens each 555

 

EDIT: Note I am not saying minimum wages are fair in Thailand I am saying this policy is yet just another racist BS move
