Jakrapob Coming Back After 15 Years In Self-Exile

JAKRAPOB PENKAIR, former minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office, is coming back tomorrow (Mar. 28) after 15 years in self-exile abroad.

 

The outspoken Jakrapob posted on his Facebook page today to say he is returning home tomorrow but it remains to be seen whether he will be immediately arrested on charge of breaking the draconian lese majeste law, also known as Section 112 of the Criminal Code, among other possible lawsuits.

 

Nevertheless, Jakrapob could probably rest assured of being saved from being literally put behind bars upon his homecoming tomorrow, given last year’s precedent in which de facto Pheu Thai boss-cum-convict on parole Thaksin Shinawatra had managed to practically keep himself from jail, according to a partisan source.

 

Thaksin who has been also accused of violating the lese majeste law by making contentious verbal statements during an interview with a South Korean news agency in Seoul in 2015 is scheduled for Apr. 10 to hear a court ruling on his case.

He aint no Thaksin nor does he have the clout or money like the Teflon Don.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when he steps foot into the LOS.....

True, this will be a test of the justice system as Teflon Don has set a precedence.

Well if he happens to get treated differently, there is sure going to be some commentary on that. He needs to develop some unsubstantiated 'sickly' symptoms though.

A former television celebrity and one-time Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office has set tongues wagging with his unexpected announcement of returning to Thailand. This marks his comeback after a self-imposed exile lasting 15 years, undertaken to avoid lese majeste charges.

 

Jakrapob Penkair posted on Facebook yesterday:

“At 7.35 am on March 28, I will return to serve Thailand.”

The ex-minister, who served under the administration of former PM Samak Sundaravej, was forced to step down in May 2008 amidst accusations of defaming the monarchy stemming from a speech he delivered at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand on August 29, 2007.

Despite the case against him being dropped by the public prosecutor in September 2011, the turbulent political landscape saw Jakrapob facing renewed scrutiny following the 2014 military coup. The junta-led National Council of Peace and Order revived charges against him, culminating in a warrant for his arrest for defiance against the ruling military.

 

Adding fuel to the fire, allegations in 2017 implicated him in possessing firearms linked to past political unrest, further complicating his legal standing, reported The Nation.

 

As the nation braces for his return, speculation runs rife about potential legal repercussions awaiting the erstwhile political talk show host, who once served as the government spokesman for Thaksin Shinawatra and held the role of PM’s Office minister under Samak’s tenure.

 

In related news, a court in Nakhon Si Thammarat officially declared activist Surachai Danwattananusorn missing, igniting concerns over his fate after years of silence since his exile in Laos in 2018.

 

The ruling, delivered on Monday, February 12, grants his wife, Pranee Danwattananusorn, the authority to handle his assets, shedding light on the ordeal endured by his family in the absence of any trace of him.

 

In other news, Amnesty International Thailand urged the Pheu Thai-led administration to immediately free political activist Arnon Nampa, who stands accused of insulting the monarchy. Despite facing serious threats from Thai conservative groups, the pressure mounts for his release.

Jakrapob case is very different from Thaksin. The latter was convicted and sentenced by the Court. The former was charged by the NCPO which has since dissolved. He can return home to contest the charges as a free man. There are many cases of 112 charges by NCPO in which the defendants fought the case and won. The current political climate will influence those charges by the coup appointed NCPO IMO.

Maybe, Some years back the paymaster made it very clear j'pob was not his favorite and the paymaster also instructed his son who was often being seen with j'pob to stay well clear of this loudmouth who is rather pink tainted. (But I'm not criticising that, just his natural behavior, his choice.)

I wasn't making a judgment one way or the other, merely noting that people & events of Thailand's past have a way of not going away. Up they pop again for another round in the ring, and often with the same ref (eg CC & EC) as last time!

 

How many court decisions have there been in just the last few days relating to matters of 15 or 20 or more years ago?
