I am trying to ship some possession s from the UK.  I have considered using an entire shipping container.       Is this possible.     ?     The freight forwarders do not want to talk to me.      The removal companies  are difficult   and not willing to just rent/sell a container.     Shipping containers are easy to buy here in the uk.   Any thoughts

You estimate the volume and weight of your possessions and the removals company book that space on a container for you and come and pack it for you. You can also buy insurance. They label the possessions on each box for potential import tax but if you put the order in your Thai wifes name then you may avoid any import tax?

I used this company back in 2015 when I moved out here. They are extremely professional and took care of everything. Packed and wrapped everything then took to their depot and placed in a container and shipped here. They have a company here who then took the goods out of the container and deliver. Could not fault them or the service.

You'll still need an agent even if you have your own container.  Booking space on a ship, customs documents etc.  Most shipping agents will not be interested in a single container, but maybe K-Line (based in Thailand at Laem Chabang) can help, as they deal in single containers for specialist automotive industry suppliers?

The relocation companies can help, and if you book a full container it's faster and simpler a part container load.

Just avoid Crown Relocation .... from my experience they are slow, unreliable and expensive.  I've heard good comments about Asian Tigers, but no direct experience.

The issue is that I want a 20ft container and just pack it myself.      I am told that the max weight including container and contents is  28k kg.

I will just fill it up  once the essentials are in there.

You could buy container and fill your self, I think. But maybe not every container could be transported.

I have the impression, containers need to be aproved, have a license for transport.

As many containers are sold just for storage and then dont need such requirements.

Did some investigation some years ago about it, showed some, but not really an answer. Then I would need the answer of a moving company.

AH, well just did a new search. I was right

However corona stepped in and forgot about immigrating.

It is 17 years since SWMBO and I moved here permanently. We shipped two 20' containers. Removal Companies quoted £7000 each for packing and shipping. We packed them ourselves, with help from friends..it took a week to do it. Final cost? £700 each, no insurance.

They arrived safely, nothing missing or broken, and minimal duties because of a comprehensive and carefully crafted packing list.

When customs opened them up to look, they were so crammed full that they immediately banged the doors shut and cleared them!

I'll ask. Why bring so much with you,? We moved from a Chonburi city house to Chiang Mai  family: 3 adults and 3 kids.

I found a moving advice site which helped. We worked all day Sat. and Sun for 3 week ends. Each item put 'on display' and then a quick :

- When was the last time we used this utem?

- Will we ever use it again.

- Is there something on the market, cheap which would be more practical and easy to buy in Chiang Mai and more...

Ultimately we threw away a very large amount of stuff.  Son spoke to a few local truckies, and got very cheap quotes for on big truck to CM. Son offered a 2 day job to 3 reliable uni colleagues:help load the truck, go with son in his mini van to CM. Move everything a nominated position in he new house. Big dinner when completed, VIP bus tickets back to Bkk. It all worked very well.

I owned a luxury house on Jomtien beach for a few years, rented sveral time to farang expats, their employers paying all moving costs.

One renting couple (Britcouple - husband and brit wife) mentioned that they a large full container arriving a few days after they moved into the house. I asked the office at the village where the house was located where the container could be 'parked' while it was unloaded. Answer: outside the village at the footpath.

Container arrived, local moving agent had arranged for 4 staff to be available to take each box one at a time from the container and drive the box (5 - 10 minutes, on a fork lift) to the house then open the box and take out the contents.

Brit husband (engineer) had gone to work, his farang wife took over the supervision of the whole operation.

Each box was opened then Brit wife indicated a). Put the contents in this cupboard, or b.) throw it away. Ultimately the majority of this 'junk' had been transported across the worls, at big expense, to be thrown away.

The moving / transport agent got quite upset about the abrupt / demanding way his 4 staff were being spoken to by the Brit wife and he called the company and complained. The Thai admin. officer came to the house and same activity was continuing. He gave a report to the US CEO. CEO was horrified about the whole scenario plus the enormous inappropriate expense.

Brit wife (alcoholic, several large bottles of gin, neat, every day) abused the CEO.

By this time the company was not satisfied with the husband's work, they were sent back to the UK, and had to pay a large reimbursement to the company.
