Headline is a bit misleading, in that for 3 months during low season, Russian tourists will be able to enter Thailand visa free for a period of 60 days. They are currently permitted to enter visa free for a period of 90 days.

Read the article, the 90 day ends at the end of this month

So what's the 300 baht charge for?

Judging by comments on that topic "Thai tourism sector proposes 300-baht tax to counter over-tourism" you aren't alone in incorrectly assuming that the intention is to lower tourist numbers.

Just another clever Thaiger headline to generate a lot of comments.

Since you asked, here are the key points of that topic:

'major tourist destinations like Phuket, Samui, and Pattaya are on the brink of over-tourism'

'..a key strategy could be to divert tourists from these hubs to the country’s secondary cities.'

'The additional revenue could be used to develop infrastructure in second-tier provinces, attract tourists away from overcrowded locations, and enhance attractions that have deteriorated due to over-tourism'

So the solution to Russians causing social problems, running illegal businesses, kidnapping and murder in some cases ... is to invite more of them. You cant make this up.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. This problem has roots in the corrupt nature of Thai police. The tendency in the Thai police when they come across all kinds of ilegal activities is to procure their share, their bribe first. This gives a strong message to all criminals that they can get away with anything.

Thailand passport holders can enter Russia visa free for up to 30 days. For longer periods of stay they have to apply for appropriate visas at the Consular Section of the Russian Embassy in Bangkok.

And quite honestly other than those with their snouts in the trough how many Thai's travel to Russia, Europe etc etc
