Try this place I found some good cheeses there it’s not that far

It depends on where you live.

I live in rural Kamphaeng Phet, so it would be an 800km round trip and an overnight stop, not to mention a pee stop every 2 hours or so.

I love very strong cheddar cheese and used to buy the Epicure version of, I think it was Mainland Cheese, at Rimping Markets. However, a small chunk (200g ?) cost over 200 baht. The Gecko Garden on Sridonchai Road near Pantip Plaza  has several excellent cheeses for sale as well as real butter (from New Zealand I think), and coldcuts at very attractive prices. They have a crumbly English cheddar, very sharp and very tasty, for about 400 baht per kilo. They sell gouda and feta cheese also.

I had eaten there once in while over the years but since I learned they also sell cheese and butter, I always buy those items there.

The same cheese at Makro for 279 baht but then 470gr or Aro house brand slighty cheaper sometimes, but same cheeses as Mainland

Last weekend Big C, Panthip Plaza, Night bazaar had all the Mainland varieties including Vintage on half price special. 250 gram blocks for 119.50 baht. Had a fair supply of each variety.

Don't know if the offer is still on or if they have any left.

That's on the list for next week at Makro.

Don't ever be tempted to buy Makro's "horeca" cheese, even for cooking, it's rubbish.

Vintage aged cheddar is the most tasty, also crumbly, as water is released during the aging process.

Tasty is softer, younger.

Jartisan cheeses are not sold in Makro.  Central Group outlets, eg Tops, GoWholesale, stock their varieties.

Good info from all of the recent posters. Thanks.

Here's an update: Gecko Garden no longer has the crumbly English cheddar I was buying. They still offer a decent cheddar but it's not as good as the one I reported on here earlier.

We almost never shop at Makro but I will check out the Tops Market at Panthip later today.

There was a shop, The Cheese Shop, on Hassadhisawee Road just north of the moat that was selling good homemade cheese last spring. The Thai owner was a nice fellow and told me he has been a cheesemaker for a long time. His cheese was on the expensive side but the samples I bought were quite tasty. I don't know if he is still in business but it might be worth taking a look

I like a strong cheese. Mature Cheddar or stronger. I used to buy mine from Greens Food and Drink opposite Kad Farang, but they have been out of stock for months and are now closing.

Tops used to have "Seriously Strong" in small amounts at a high price but no longer stock it. Makro, Rimping and the other supermarkets have Dutch or Italian cheeses which are too mild for my taste or that processed excuse for a cheese from USA or Australia.

Has anybody in Chiang mai area seen a decent cheese for sale recently?

Go talk to Rudy at Gekko Garden.

Dear CallumWK:

"to me, and most other people, French cheeses are about the best in the world"

With respect, I should tread very Caerphilly on this one, sir. British cheeses have for centuries 'graced' the tables of many a true Englishman from a Stinking Bishop to a Lincolnshire Poacher.

I am forced to accept that Stilton does not come from Stilton but are you sure that you are British? Does the Monty Python Cheese Shop sketch mean nothing to you? Are you not a fan of Wallace and Gromit?

You like French cheeses?  Well, chacun a son goo. I may not be able to write accents, but when I say 'goo', I mean 'goo'!

Enjoy nibbling your brie, sir. I'll get down to some serious eating and go for the full Stilton.

From one turophile to another, whatever it is, enjoy it, sir (as long as it's genuinely cheesy)
