NOTE:  I guess I am only voicing my regret, as I finally reach the final endpoint of my timeline on planet Earth, that I wish TV were still here, just as it once was.  I have such fond memories of the guys who posted, and the CULTURE of TV, too.  I am sure that you might not understand, unless your thinking is usually like mine, which is something that I do not recommend.  Sometimes, you just would not believe how nostalgic I become, at times, for things like the TV Forum, as it once was.

 

I just wish that I were a better writer in order to better communicate my innermost feelings, about this, to you....

To remain in the line of the OP's topic, the value of social media is based on it's numbers and the quantity and amount of posts.

Any public posting forum has no chance of survival if comments are systematically deleted or if there is any form of over moderation.  Obviously, explicit and hate comments or anything against the law has no place in social media whatsoever. But just deleting a comment on pure ideologic grounds or conflict of opinion, will never enable any such platform to grow and develop.

AseanNow, or Thaivisa as it was originally known, is decades old.  I joined the forum at the start of 2002, more than 22 years ago. Over the years I have seen the original forum grow and develop, then recede and decline and wither until it is just a shadow of it's former self.  Perhaps we should ask why that has happened. 

 

IMHO, there are 2 reasons:

- The growth of social media means that web-based forums are 'old hat'.  Now it's mostly mobile-based apps, and this forum ease-of-use is 'appalling' when one tries to use it on a mobile device. I know - I've tried!

- The number of trolls, sub-intellect and mentally-ill forum members seems to have increased exponentially since the 'good old days'. They take away the enjoyment of this forum.

 

Apart from that, it's wonderful...

There were as many horrible posters on TV as there are now on AN, but I never felt the need to put them on ignore, as I do now. Seems that the insults got more vicious. I have a theory about that but not permitted to post it.

 

I certainly spent a lot more hours on it than I do on AN. There were more interesting posters IMO, and more interesting threads.

 

However, everything changes or ends, and not normally for my benefit, so put up with it ( or use the ignore function a lot ), or join the many that chose to leave.

While I was a privileged white child, the world I grew up in was better than now. Kids were safe to play away from home all day, crime was minimal compared to today, I wasn't fearful of being beaten up for being white, and when it came time to get a job I had loads to choose from, without needing a barrow load of qualifications. I left school with no qualifications and still had 3 different careers.

We wanted less, and had a better life for it.

No personal computers, no mobile phones, no amplified noise masquerading as music, and best of all no social media, no twit thing or x as it is now, no facethingy, no fast food, no plastic Maccers, cars looked different, even if they needed more maintenance, and we could maintain them ourselves.

We had people in banks instead of a machine, no one was thinking of getting rid of money and forcing people to use a machine.

 

But better than all that, greed didn't rule the world.

Decades ago I joined TV, but met mainly people filled with envy, grumpyness, and a lot of hatred. Up to now no change. And culture? It's only a downturn.

You would be surprised when visiting ThaigerTalk now.  The only fair and decent Mod is now Head Administrator and he is the ONLY moderator left on the Forum, with Free Speech now being their policy.  None of my post there have been altered or deleted since that radical change now 6 months ago with all TT-moderators leaving or being booted.
