Feeling guilty after freeloaders

Doesn't matter what country your in ,as a tourist you are always going to get the "freeloaders"

 

But DON'T feel guilty AFTER 

 

Now this morning a middle aged farang was moaning  that his part time  girlfriend and she took him somewhere yesterday and went back to I presume to get friends bar or  restaurant ( I didn't ask ) and paid for whisky and mixers 

People he never met including his words of ladyboys etc

 

They sat there drinking whisky and coke or whatever and people came and go some didn't acknowledge him 

Now this is the morning after and he is bitter ,,they ordered found on his tab etc

Bill was 5000

All this to impress a girl he has known on /off for several years visiting Pattaya 

 

I known her for years !

thought she was a friend he said 

But she just used me to entertain her friends he said 

 

Now I didn't want to make him angry so I said " but you had a good time didn't you !

You enjoyed it !

Not really he shouted back ,I got used !

And the most funniest thing he said was ....

"And after the checkbin....they all left me ! One guy offered to drive him back to the hotel for 100 baht despite drinking all the whisky 🥃 

 

He wanted a 100 baht he shouted

I started laughing so hard

He left ,he got up guilty angry with me ?

And he stormed off 

 

And this is guilt after ,a type of psychology 

 

Makes me remember a few weeks Eric a lovely guy in the view talay who got talked into having a party in his small condo by a group of thaus he met at a market stall

 

He invited me and soon as I arrived I could see they had no interest in him only the free alcohol and prawns 

 

I dont drink alcohol so I was watching for approx 30 minutes before I left ,one tattoed Thai guy asked me for gasoline money 😳

I didn't invite you I told him 

 

Next day Eric was feeling guilty ....

They wouldn't leave he said 

 

The psychology is ....

If your going to do it ....do it with knowledge of fun.......

You enjoy it ...

Why does GUILT come after ?

It's a bit like gambling I guess 

 

Now paying for a party for strangers also happens in Philippines and everywhere else 

Stop the psychology of GUILTY

It sounds more like he felt 'used' rather than 'guilty'. You quoted him yourself in the story. Naturally, after you realize you've been used it is not a good feeling.

Reminds me of the soriee my neighbor had in chiang mai. He invited all his friends then acted like I was a co-host and needed to go half on expenses.

 

Your friends, not mine, I told him. He also bought all the goods on his own without clearance from me, so it's on him. The fact that I lived next door had nothing to do with it.

 

There's a lot of people around that try to mooch like this. It's a lack of boundries where they in fact genuinely believe you owe them something.

In my opinion, this is about “face” and the quality of Thais you hang around with.

 

Type A) Decent Thais that are genuine gain face amongst their peers by buying others (including foreigners) food, drinks, etc. even if they can’t really afford it.

 

Type B) Bargirls and lower quality Thais will gain face amongst their peers by demonstrating they can manipulate foreigners to buy food, drinks, etc. for them and their friends even if they have money.

 

Both types are “showing off” but in different ways.  
 

Once face / social status is settled, splitting bills, taking turns to pay, etc. can become the norm with Type A. Type B will move on to their next victim.

 

If you stay away from the tourist hotspots, you’ll find more of Type A and less of Type B. Exception being if you go upcountry with Type B and introduced to all and sundry as an ATM.

 

Every interaction is different and this is simplified but I don’t like to see the decent Thais given a bad name by bad apples.

This reminds me of the time I visited Korat to run the marathon. Got there a few days before and decided to see what sort of night life it had. Met a couple of girls in a bar and they suggested we go to a beer bar type place with live music.

A few hours later our table size had grown from 3 of us to around 20. All ordering bottles of whiskey and I could see that nobody was paying for drinks as they were ordered. 

I joined in the fun for a few more hours but at the front of my mind was the knowledge that I would eventually be stuck with this huge bill. So I did what any self respecting guy would do... I went to the toilet, slipped out the side door and with a smug grin, stumbled back to my hotel.

I had a nice gal, hardest body ever.  44kg lean and Amazing.    We went out to a late lunch and her friend came with.  It was a nice place and we ate outside.  There was a bar ditch not 20 meters from our table. Had some water in it.  A public trail on the far side.  The friend was on the big side.  They ordered like 10 dishes.   I'm not keen on not eating all you order unless you plan to eat leftovers . There was at least half the food left and I was a bit bothered.  But the last straw was when a poor looking father and son walked down the path hunting for food. They saw something in the ditch and looked to check if any restaurant staff was looking then the father pounched into the ditch.  I think he caught a frog.   Right after the friend left i told this gal i didn't need a ride back to my hotel.   My plans had changed and they didn't include her.   It was feeding a pig and the food waste in a 3rd world country that bothered me.

My limited experience is Thai girl will order and expect a foreign boyfriend/husband to pay.  If you do Not want to pay go to the server tell them who is on your bill. Explain to girlfriend that they are not your friends (Foreign boyfriend, friends)  If girlfriend wants to pay from her money (allowance) okay.

 

Limited experience but they will not ask if they are on your bill, You or girlfriend invite or mention others joining it is Required for the foreigner to inform Thais who is paying for what.  Different customs here.  Was in Ecuador and if you invited someone to restaurant or bar it was common for you to pay.

 

Do Not be insulted, Most or all have been educated on this custom by paying the bill.

Usually if the host invites someone they will add an "on me" or "on the house" during the invite. Just like what would happen at a classy bar or casino with a complimentary drink. If not, then a mention of a "cover" or "cover charge" is given. This lets people know what to expect in terms of payment.  

 

Just letting people arrive or issuing random invites assumes the host is paying by default. For one thing, the guests may not have the means to pay on them or the event may be out of their budget. So asking for payment at the end of the night is taboo.

 

The Op should have set expectations at the table, maybe with the server there, as the strange guests arrived. Or a hushed whisper to the server of "seperate bills". No need to be coy about it.
