The final verdict, Savill predicted, would depend on the “cost Ukraine has to pay” for its lightning cross-border assault. If the operation forces Russia to “thin out” its front line and “creates a sea change in international support, with renewed equipment for Ukraine and a change in the caveats about its use of western long-range weapons in Russia, that would also be a win”, he said.

That plays both ways. If Ukraine ups the missile attacks inside Russia it will result in more Russian missile attacks and we know what the targets will likely be. If Russia gets punished too much IMO it is more likely that tactical nukes will be used and if that happens it's anyone's guess how it ends up.

In case anyone missed it this is what escalation looks like.

Round and round we go and where we end up nobody knows.

Off topic insensitive nonsense. I was referring to the documented facts of the atrocities in Bucha.

The supposition that the Russian economy is on their knees , they are out of ammo , men , missiles and tanks and that Putin will die/be toppled or such like are simply not true. It's day 900 and something and a country that in 2022 was deemed to be spent has just launched it's biggest ever attack on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. This can go on indefinatley until Ukraine is effectively destroyed as a viable independent state  and Russia severely wounded. Which may just be what the US wants or accepts. They certainly don't want to go in on the ground or escalate their donations that's for sure. Nor does their second biggest donor Germany.

Nationwide air raid alerts were triggered in the early hours as Ukraine's air defences sprang into action to shoot down a torrent of drones, which were launched as Moscow seeks revenge for Ukraine's invasion of its Kursk region.

The attacks kept coming, and hours later Ukraine's air force warned that Russia had deployed almost a dozen Tu-95 and six Tu-22M3 strategic bombers which let loose salvo after salvo of missiles.

MiG-31K warplanes - capable of firing fearsome Kinzhal supersonic missiles - and four naval vessels were also involved in the bombardment.

Russian missiles have flown into NATO space at least twice. That makes it legitimate to shoot them down from NATO territory - President of Poland Andrzej Duda. @AndrzejDuda
added that discussions are ongoing in NATO regarding that and he hopes for a positive decision.

Of course, how dare they use Poland's airspace, knock them out of the sky while you can!

That sounds like Russian propaganda.

No, not the way you suggest. Everyone can edit Wiki and all edits are recorded in perpetuity. As soon as you add your pro-Putin propaganda, responsible community members will fix it and you too will be recorded in perpetuity along with discussions about your attempt.  That's one reason Russia's storied propaganda machine hasn't made headway into Wiki.

Zelensky concedes that Russia has dealt heavy damage to Ukraine's energy sector. He appeals for European nations to reach consensus and start shooting down enemy missiles over Ukraine, just like they did in the Middle East. He has now repeatedly called out the US (leader of NATO), the UK (the most war hawkish nation) and France (strategic leader of Europe) for failing to meet his expectations, in terms of weapon deliveries, air defenses and now consensus on escalation. If these three are letting him down, what hope does Ukraine even have? When the US used to boast of bombing countries back to the stone age it wasn't funny then and it isn't funny now.

Heroes behind the lines in enemy territory

How the covert Ukrainian resistance movement is operating behind Russian lines

Run by the Ukrainian special forces, this resistance movement is growing, according to its commander, who said any adult - old, young, male, female - can join. In an echo of Britain's Special Operations Executive that ran missions behind enemy lines during World War Two, the tasks of the Ukrainian resistance inside territory captured by Moscow include espionage, sabotage and "eliminating" Russian forces, the commander told Sky News.
He said the men and women of the resistance are active in Crimea as well as parts of southern and eastern Ukraine and have carried out jobs within Russia.

As ever the superb Gideon Rachman calls it straight - I had the privilege to hear him speak live earlier this year and there is no better journalist alive today. Ukraine has crossed Moscow’s and Washington’s red lines Zelenskyy is prepared to ignore Russia’s nuclear threats. But the Biden administration is still wary of escalating the war - Gideon Rachman -FINANCIAL TIMES

https://archive.is/WsAW2

In the aftermath of the Kursk incursion, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has been contemptuous of the restraints that America has placed on Ukraine’s war efforts, denouncing the “naive, illusory concept of so-called red lines regarding Russia, which dominated the assessment of the war by some partners”. That view, said the Ukrainian president, has now “crumbled”.
But has it? The difference between the caution in Washington and the risk-taking in Kyiv reflects not just a difference in analysis about how far Vladimir Putin can be pushed. It is also a reflection of a subtle difference in war aims.
At the start of the conflict, President Joe Biden set his administration two goals. The first was to support Ukraine. But the second was to avoid world war three. If forced to choose between those two aims, the US would clearly choose the latter.

The spirit of Ukrainians "But we’re used to it and know we live in this dangerous situation, so we are not scared."

Gains in Russian territory shape Ukraine independence celebrations

BBC An orchestra plays on a rooftop as a crowd watches on, several people holding up phones to take photos and videos.

Along with all Ukrainians celebrating their Independence Day, 19-year-old student Yuliia Vyshnivska had been warned of an increased threat of Russian strikes.

But it had not stopped her and hundreds of others making their way up to an exposed rooftop for an open-air musical display of defiance in the heart of Kyiv.

“I heard on the radio the Americans were warning that the Russians will bomb you today, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, they want to kill us'," she said, as the setting sun illuminated the patterns of her traditional outfit, the vyshyvanka.

"But we’re used to it and know we live in this dangerous situation, so we are not scared."

Latest ground maps of both sides gains. Ukraine still inching forwards in Kursk and Russians doing the same further south.

Russia has not yet moved forces from its main front to reinforce Kursk indicating that they are in no rush to eject the Ukrainians from Russian territory.

Given there is no army hiding and waiting to follow up the invasion, seems to me that this was Zelensky's Battle of the Bulge, a last gasp before the inevitable end.

Russia can leave them there till their supplies run out.

In my and other's opinion, this was an attempt to divert good troops from the big prize in the east, but Russia didn't take the bait. Once Pokrovsk falls the end can't be far off.

Shouldn't have trusted them.

Now all Zelensky can do is rage impotently as Ukraine burns.

I for one hope they don't be so foolish as to become directly involved- that's a straight path to MAD.
