Petition to Recriminalize Cannabis Reportedly Signed by Over 100,000 People

On June 6, 2024, Thailand's Public Health Minister, Somsak Thepsuthin, spoke about the potential reclassification of cannabis as a type 5 narcotic. According to Thai news sources, an anti-cannabis group known as the "Youth Network Against Cannabis (YNAC)" has forwarded a petition signed by over 100,000 people, proposing to make cannabis use illegal, except for medical and health reasons.

 

Somsak expressed that the government is inclined towards this approach. Despite previous efforts to re-criminalize cannabis not gaining wide acceptance, the Health Minister promises to reduce tensions between pro and anti-cannabis factions.

 

When asked about a pro-cannabis group’s call for a public debate or vote on the reclassification, a move that hasn't yet been pursued, Somsak reaffirmed his commitment to fairness. However, he did not expressly confirm if he would initiate a debate or public vote.

 

In answering concerns about the potential impact on the cannabis industry post-legalization, the Minister reassured that operations aligning with medical and health guidelines would still be considered legal. He was quick to add that while they plan to reclassify cannabis as a narcotic, it will not be excessively difficulty or costly to legally use cannabis for medical purposes. On the flip side, using it for leisure would be seen as an offense.

 

With regards to the upcoming "Shaping the Future of Thai Cannabis" protest set to take place on June 9 at the Government House, Somsak mentioned he wasn't aware of it but was ready to address the group's concerns. Protesters are set to express their disapproval of the move to re-criminalize cannabis and question the fairness and credibility of the petition presented by opposing groups.

Pro-weed groups have been given no right to put forward their views. There was a ''public forum" where only the anti dope side was allowed to participate. The pro dope people want regulation not criminalisation. This is the correct way to go IMO and it's an opinion I have posted previously. There is absolutely no logic to take money out of the local market and push it back into the black market. The arguments coming from the govt. have not been supported by evidence, and what the impact of recriminalistion will be have, either not been studied or not been released to the public. Like something else we all know only one side of the narrative is being pushed.

The real reason these anti weed people are here doing this is because they missed the bus for under the table payoffs and free money now they want to change the rules,, as someone else said earlier want about the real criminals like Taksin and Red bull boy.

I couldn’t care less whether people choose to use cannabis or not, their choice.

 

but I do object to my having to put up with the smell these shops generate. Riding down the road on my motorbike I know when I am passing a cannabis shop simply by the smell wafting across the road. And a couple of restaurants I like are now out of bounds due to the smell from newly opened cannabis shops next door. 
 

I can’t speak for other areas in Thailand, but in Phuket most cannabis shops seems to have outside seating areas where patrons can smoke and socialize. The smell generated is very unpleasant for those around them.

 

it’s all very reminiscent of the days when going to a pub or even in an office would leave one’s clothes reeking of cigarette smoke.

 

Individuals can do what they want to themselves, but why should others suffer?
